He was the best leader Russia could have had at that time in their history.

Покойся с миром, Михаил Горбачев.

I never forgave Time magazine for naming Gorbachev the “Man of the Decade”, snubbing Reagan.

As a behind the scenes Cold Warrior in the 1980’s, I have to say those were among the best years of my life. 2 men, 2 leaders who had the will and the ability to dial back the threat of nuclear war. If only for the briefest of moments. And look at the 2 bozos in charge now...UGh. I will say prayers for Gorbachev. I will look for the documentary; I would be very much interested.

Gorbachev ended the Cold War??

As an analogy, when a boxer is getting beat to a pulp and his corner man throws in the towel, you could say the corner man ended the fight. Reagan and Thatcher (and the US tax payer) were surely more responsible for the end of the Soviet Union. They were Muhammad Ali in the Thrilla in Manila, while Gorbachev was Frazier's (USSR's) corner man.

Sadly, Gorbachev outlived his legacy and watched Putin try to rebuild the Soviet Empire. Similarly, Bush Jr is living to see his legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan destroyed.

Oh....BULLcrap.

Ronald Reagan was the one man mostly responsible for ending the cold war. Margaret Thatcher gets some credit too. they DEFEATED the Soviet Union. Yes, I know, the CCCP ended after Reagan left office, but it was due to his actions and policies that it happened at all.

The Soviet Union ceased to exist the moment Yeltsin took the Russian Republic out of the USSR. He was greatly honored at his funeral for bringing the first buds of liberty. Of course, the 90s were tough. It was a time of transition that included inevitable economic instability. But Yeltsin stopped the atmosphere of the Lubyanka and replaced it with the airs of freedom.

He was no buffoon.

When I hear the name “Gorbachov” that is exactly the first thing that comes to mind for me.

He was a Soviet Leader who wasn’t on his deathbed while he was in office.

The rest of them were largely plywood cutouts they made to witness the May Day parades in Red Square, cutouts that had hinged arms that could be made to appear to wave.

Testing the waters?

No, but Trump was never a fan of Reagan, never voted for him, and I think now that he has been president, he wants to see how he is doing on the pedestal status, so far the crowds ignore the little probe.

A Good commie is a dead commie. Gorbachev was a commie up until his death. And so is Putin.

That's not the way I heard it! I heard that after Trump had a personal meeting with President Reagan in the 80s, he told Trump that he'd be president himself one day. And he was right!

None of that is true, the greeting line handshakes were it, no private meeting, and no such quote, after supporting Carter in 1980 he donated to Mondale’s campaign 10 months after Reagan’s inauguration, but in 1984 he donated $1,000 to Reagan’s campaign, there was no relationship and Trump never voted for him.
