With 500 Russian troops killed or wounded every day, according to the latest estimate by American intelligence and military officials, Russia’s war effort has decelerated to a grinding slog, the officials said.

The main propaganda problem for the Putin strategy is the growing opposition of civilians in Russian occupied Ukraine. Currently Russia is trying to find enough local collaborators to allow convincing propaganda videos. This effort is disrupted by the widespread and often violent resistance to the occupation, local collaborators and efforts to stage a fake election. Russian efforts to cut occupied areas off from the outside world have been energetic but not enough. Replacing Ukrainian cell phone service with Russian based service is not enough. Civilians will risk arrest and worse by keeping their Ukrainian cell phones to collect and smuggle out videos of what is really going on. This includes threats, sometimes carried out, to cut electrical service and access to clean water. Threats were made to yank children from families and send the kids to Russia as hostages. The Ukrainians realize that if they can get video evidence of such threats or actions out, the Russians will be forced to back down. For many people inside Russia these tactics are not acceptable, especially when so many Ukrainians obviously see the Russian troops as invaders, not liberators. This has turned many Russians against their own government. This is nothing new as it happened in 1991 and several other times in the last century. Bad behavior by aggressive Russian governments is the main reason NATO exists and Ukraine wants to join it.

The Russian population is & has been against the war in Ukraine.

Quite true. Russia’s military is experiencing troop shortages and the avoidance of service and deployment to Ukraine. In addition, corruption, hazing and brutality, the lack of a reliable NCO corps, and the poor conditions of military life depress morale and combat motivation.

“Independent” - LOL. The guy who runs it Dunnigan, is a CONSULTANT for the State Department and DOD. What do you expect him to say (if he wants to feed his family)?

Anyway, the world will soon see what the people there want once they hold their referendums next month.

Jim Dunnigan is now in his late seventies and is mostly retired, except for the Strategy Page website. He is not currently a State Department consultant and has not been for years. His assessment of Russia's conduct in the Donbas is well-founded and similar to that of the European press. And, in any event, in the Putin era, Russia simply does not hold free and honest elections, not in Russia and not in territories it has conquered and intends to annex.

Contrary to the old adage, the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily a friend or ally. Sending hearts and flowers Putin's way, calling Russia anti-globalist, and cheering her on as she attempts to devour a neighboring nation is wrong to the point of absurdity.
