Planet Earth has recorded its shortest day since scientists began using atomic clocks to measure the speed of its rotation. Earth’s time systems can prove fairly baffling for anyone who doesn’t have a PhD in Horology, as we learnt the hard way trying to figure out why the clocks were going forward as a child – only understanding that we were being dragged out of bed for school an hour earlier than the week before.
But the plot thickens further still, as Earth is actually spinning faster than it used to and recently recorded a time that was the fastest scientists had ever seen. On 29 June 2022, Earth completed one spin in 1.59 milliseconds less than its usual 24-hour rotation, in turn setting the record for the shortest day – and the latest in a series of speed records for our planet since 2020.

Yes. Climate change. Hotter air is less viscous than colder air, so there’s less resistance to the earth’s rotation, yielding shorter days.

I thought i felt dizzier than usual lol
I used to read it almost religiously. I would buy it for the space alien stories.
Someone in the astronomy club I belong to suggested that I make a slide show out of them and do a funny program at one of our club meetings.
With the help of a fellow member who photographed them all, and a
Kodak Carousel projector, it was a hit.
First I secured permission to use them from the Editor-in-Chief, and I later was asked to replay it when we hosted a national convention of the Astronomical League, I think it was in 1996. I got a shout-out from either the AL’s publication, The Reflector, or Sky and Telescope Magazine, I can’t remember which.
It was fun. That long ago, we didn’t have to worry about offending someone.
