The current COVID surge has put Sacramento County in a precarious position. The highly transmissible and evasive BA.5 subvariant is getting little resistance from a population that has largely abandoned basic precautions like mask-wearing that limited its spread. While deaths and hospitalizations are lower thanks to the availability of vaccines and treatments, we invite new risks by ignoring what we have learned after two-plus years and 1 million deaths.

The towns in the North State completely ignored Newsom’s mask edict. I was there visiting during that time and very few people were masked.
If a person wants to walk around with a paper muzzle on their face, well fine. Do so, but don’t try to force others to do the same.

Even so, we need constant exposure to to bacteria and viruses of all sorts to keep our immune systems strong. Children need to see faces and lips to develop language skills. In Northern CA (Sacramento isn’t Northern CA) mask use went away pretty quickly. There are still some of the Birkenstock/man-with-ponytail/ flameroo liberal bunch that are faithful to the religion that mandates the covering of the lower face. Should you see a masked one, take a good look at (Insert pronoun). You will mutter, “It figures.”

Prior to my recent retirement I worked at a large hardware store in the Bay Area. The majority of my coworkers continue to wear masks, despite there being no mandates. Do they all live with at-risk elders?
These are the people who will be the first to die in a real emergency.

Here is the half-truth big lie that makes it clear the author is promoting scare tactics to try to control the public.

That’s a lie. Yes deaths and hospitalizations are lower but that is because the new variant while seemingly better at infecting us is proving less lethal/severe in terms of illness we get from it - regardless of vaccinations and current treatments.
The virus is on a natural trend of similar viruses, more people get it but it is less of a problem for more people. That is nature’s way of how a virus survives - killing fewer hosts. The variants that kill fewer hosts die out less frequently than do variants that kill more of their hosts. “Being fit” for viruses means NOT killing the hosts it depends on.
These mandatory mask wearers should have to first wipe their butts with the mask before wearing them to prove their intense idiocy and ignorance to the fact these masks cause disease, they stink even before they wipe their butts with them, and they are literally petri dishes of disease causing bacteria.
Mask wearers outside specific conditions like surgery are just nasty.
When will folks figure out that all of these issues have a shred of truth to them. However, politics and business interests distort them for their own benefit and what you end up with is often laughable.
Masks that do not work.
Quarantines and social distancing that have not reduced the total number infected in the end (it just slows it down - However, that can be an argument for quarantines in its own right as this prevents the health care system from being over taxed).
Closing beaches and Jacuzzi's... what exactly was the logic behind that? Are they worried that salt water, high temperatures, UV light, sand or so much chlorine that it beeches the clothes and hair might help spread covid? Where do you think you're more at risk of contacting Covid: (1) in Biden's White House, a in a meeting with Newsome, in most peoples home or (2) at a beach?
MOST of what was done didn't even make any frigging sense. They just said it did, and because they said so, it must be true.

And then there are the true believers, the folks that if someone in a white lab coat and with a big title tells them to electrocute their neighbors kid, they would. The true believers simply “believe” and while they use phrases like “following the science,” that is hardly the case.
The die hard true believers still think everyone should drink the cool aid, even though you see folks dropping dead from it. The true believers see the greater good, the higher purpose, and if need be they will force it own your throat. It's always been that way, may it by some idiot in a brown shirt, some idiot in Jonestown, some idiot burning people at a stake, some idiot persecuting folks on trumped up charges of being communists...
We are now at a point where only the true believers are still clinging to their alternate version of reality anmd of course you need to do what they say, or else!
