Japanese voters went to the polls Sunday in the shadow of the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was gunned down while making a campaign speech. Abe's governing party appeared to be cruising to a major victory.
As people voted, police in western Japan sent the alleged assassin to a local prosecutors' office for further investigation. A day earlier a top regional police official acknowledged possible security lapses that allowed the attacker to get so close and fire a bullet at the still-influential former Japanese leader.
In a country still recovering from the shock, sadness and fear of Abe's shooting — the first former or serving leader to be assassinated in postwar Japan — polling started for half of the upper house, the less powerful of Japan's two-chamber parliament.
Abe was shot in Nara on Friday and airlifted to a hospital but died of blood loss. Police arrested a former member of Japan's navy at the scene. Police confiscated a homemade gun and several others were later found at his apartment.
The alleged attacker, TetsuyaYamagami, told investigators he acted because of Abe's rumored connection to an organization that he resented, police said, but had no problem with the former leader's political view. The man had developed hatred toward a religious group that his mother was obsessed about and that bankrupted a family business, according to media reports, including some that identified the group as the Unification Church.
Abe's body, in a black hearse accompanied by his wife, Akie, returned to his home in Tokyo's upscale Shibuya, where many mourners, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and top party officials, paid tribute. His wake and funeral are expected in coming days.
Nara prefectural police chief Tomoaki Onizuka on Saturday said that Abe's assassination was the "greatest regret" in his 27-year

“ Japan’s ruling party scored a sweeping victory in Sunday’s House of Councillors election, helping pro-constitutional amendment forces retain the two-thirds majority needed to push for revising the supreme law, an unaccomplished goal of former leader Shinzo Abe whose assassination days earlier shocked the nation.”
For 66 years the LDP has run the show , and probably always will . One thing I don’t like about Japan .
I hope that Abe’s party cleans up the competition. He was a good man.
Japan needs to change its military capability past Self Defence.I hope they manage to change the Supreme Law. If Iran has nukes, Japan certainly should have them as a deterrant against china and North Korea as well as Russia.
Despite it’s name, the “Liberal Democratic” Party is actually conservative.
I believe the United States itself made Japan put that in its post WWII-constitution, as a safeguard against another imperialistic military "Empire of Japan" rising to power.
Since when do conservatives tax the hell out of people ???
Actually there have been a few times when the LDP wasn’t in power
In 2009 the Democratic Party (of Japan) ruled the country. They were ousted 3 years later because like any Democrat they jacked taxes through the roof and got beaten in the 2012 elections.

“possible security lapses”
That is always a key signature of Deep State assassinations, bombings, terrorism.
They rig the game board before playing the game.
The “Liberal Democrats” in Japan are STILL probably much more conservative than what passes for so-called “conservatives” in European countries like the UK and France. I don’t think Shinzo Abe ever heaped praise on homo marriages, called for socialized healthcare, celebrated Islamic holidays, endorsed 0bama’s presidential campaign, complained U.S. Democrats aren’t liberal ENOUGH on global warning, demanded the U.S. reinstate Roe v. Wade, etc., etc.
OK - they have ruled 63 out of 67 years . Not bad , ey ?
They were also out of power for three years in the 1990s. Two of the three parties that were in power then don’t exist anymore. The other one was the Socialists (now the Social Democrats). One advantage the LDP has is that it’s been around as long as it has. The other parties are always forming and reforming and changing their names.
As long as the elections are legit, why not.
Perhaps the Japanese don’t like the socialism of the other parties that much.
One year in the 90’s ( 1993-94 ) and three years from 2009-2012 = 4 years total .
More to it than that .
Yes, that is true. But now Japan must take on a full role of a completely armed ally.We need their help in this way and no longer can go it alone when we have to wade our way through unAmerican presidents like Biden. Japan has to keep the faith on the front against China while we rid ourselves of those who weaken our military.
They are an entrenched party of power. Better than the left though.
Japan really needs to amend their constitution and increase their military, should have happened years ago.
