Poll: Quarter of Americans open to armed rebellion against government

A new University of Chicago poll found that over a quarter of a deeply alienated American public, particularly those who identify as Republican, believe that it may “soon be necessary to take up arms” against the government,

The poll, a collaboration between Republican and Democratic pollsters Neil Newhouse and Joel Benenson, respectively, surveyed 1,000 registered voters around the U.S.. A slight majority of those, 56%, said they believed the government was corrupt and “rigged against everyday people like me,” with self-identified Republicans polling substantially higher on that question than Democrats.

In total, 28% of voters agreed with the statement “it may be necessary at some point soon for citizens to take up arms against the government.” That skewed heavily toward Republicans, with one in three Republicans and 45% of self-identified “strong Republicans” agreeing with the statement. The GOP doesn’t hold a monopoly on the sentiment, though – one in five Democrats agreed, as did 35% of self-identified independent voters.

The belief in armed resistance was loosely correlated with actual gun ownership. About 37% of those who said they had guns in their homes also agreed with the “taking up arms” statement.

“These really are stunning results, that really go to the depth of the nation’s partisan divide and the extent to which Americans really don’t trust the media to provide unbiased information,” Newhouse said in an interview. “The bottom line is, it’s worse out there than we thought.”

Newhouse also pointed to the impact of political divides on Americans’ personal lives.

Prediction: If need be, the Democrat Party will allow the entry of foreign troops to suppress the American people.

Weird. I kinda remember five months of mass rioting and all that goes with it. The part about guns might have something to do with results, but the vast majority of democrats i listen too have zero respect for this country’s traditions, let alone give a damn about it….

“I guess “soon” is open to interpretation.”

Exactly. That’s why it is a stupid question.

If the questioner wanted to be serious he or she would have established specifics.

But like almost all their plan, they overreach and build their plans on false assumptions.

They will lose terribly on this one and pay a terrible price in blood.

Newhouse said in an interview. “The bottom line is, it’s worse out there than we thought.”

Oh yes it is! They keep going after our President Trump for made-up charges; all the while the Clintons and Biden's are not jailed. You betcha we're pissed. I don't think other countries are going to supply us with missiles and aid, it's all on us once the shooting starts.

I think the number is low. Most reliable folks I know would never say yes, they are ready to go kinetic to a survey given by a stranger. But, everyone tuned in does seem pretty wound up. It might depend on who the Big Voices are and what the circumstances were. You threaten family in general and I would not want to be in the way.

“The question said “soon.””

And what, exactly, is “soon?”

It’s too much of an abstract. With such questions, the less abstract it is the more valuable the data.

The way this question is worded I’d think it was a “gotcha!” question by folks whose intentions might be...questionable.

“It’s a stupid question because it is open-ended. I mean, is it possible that sometime within the next 1,000 years the American people might rise up against the government? Yes, it’s possible. However, if the question limited that time period to, say, the next ten years, the answer would in all likelihood be No. Ditto for twenty years. And thirty years.”

Good post and you have a good sense of history.

I see more of a cold war between existing political factions over the next decade or two.

The timeline could move up or down depending on things like a big economic contraction or a large international war.

IMO our government would “give in” before they allow a shooting war to start between organized Americans. In other words they’ll compromise to keep the peace.

Sh#t study. Both sides of the issues had similar notions. They didn’t ask which government. The current one, or a possible future one. So theoretically almost everyone would believe in taking up arms assuming a future military dictatorship.

Other than that it is probably a scare tactic poll meant to get Biden cultists afraid of what the future portends if the voters get rid of the biden administration.

Not me.

I am a happy little serf.

Just growing my food, paying my taxes and tugging my forelock to my betters.

Sheesh.

Saying anything else to a polling company is like bugging your own house.

Exactly. Say you are asked in a survey whether you are open to taking up arms against the government. If you were of that ilk, I would think you would kinda keep it to yourself...

I’d just prefer that states like Florida secede.

I’m sure the Dumb-O-Crats are shocked that so many Americans feel that way. After all, they’re only about to foster gasoline and diesel shortages by shutting down the Permian basin oil patch, supposedly over ozone pollution.

Methodology

On behalf of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, Public Opinion Strategies and the Benenson Strategy Group completed a survey of N=1,000 registered voters across the United States. The survey was conducted via an online methodology from May 19-23, 2022, and has a credibility interval of ±3.53%.

Sample for the survey was provided by EMI, a provider of research-only online sample. EMI builds its panel through “open enrollment” and “by-invitation-only” recruitment campaigns, via direct email and through online marketing channels, utilizing hundreds of diverse, online affiliate partners and targeted websites.

Quotas were set for gender, region, age, ethnicity, and education. Modest weighting was also applied to these same variables upon completion of interviewing based on demographic information available from the Census. Modest weighting was also applied by 2020 Presidential vote to match the national election results.

So, basically, the drew a biased sample. Nothing new.

Still, what I DID find entertaining, was if you look deeper...

-19% of liberals (vs 7% of conservatives) "Got a divorce or ended a romantic relationship because of differing political views."

-51% of libs (vs 25% of conservatives) " Stopped speaking with a relative because his or her political views are too offensive to you."

-14% of libs (vs 4% of conservatives) "have sought out emotional therapy to deal with the impact that partisan politics has had on me."
