My grandfather contracted polio, and it affected his fine motor skills in his hands.
In the winter, he would go to the barn and hook the mule to a sledge. He’d drag the sledge from the barn to the house until it was clear. Then he’d bring the cow to the back porch, so grandma could milk the cow. His hands just couldn’t do the job.

Iirc, there have been cases where polio victims have relapsed decades later due, I suppose, to the virus remaining present in the body similar to the shingles virus. I hope the Covid vaccine has not awakened it.
