One photo of an IRS cafeteria overstuffed with paper shows why you haven't gotten your refund check yet — and just how underfunded the agency is

The IRS is underfunded and understaffed, and had to deal with new pandemic responsibilities.

The result has been a massive backlog of unprocessed tax returns, many of them on paper.

A photo from the agency's Austin facility shows just how much paper the IRS is dealing with.

The IRS is still full of paper.

The agency has been contending with a historic backlog of unprocessed tax returns amidst new pandemic responsibilities, understaffing, and underfunding. The result: A massive build-up of unprocessed tax returns, many of which belong to Americans who have been waiting on refund checks.

Natasha Sarin, a tax policy and implementation counselor at the Treasury Department, shared a photo on Twitter of the cafeteria at the IRS's Austin site. In it, the room is "overrun" with paper returns awaiting employees.....

Increased funding for the IRS could make filing a lot more efficient, according to the Treasury Department. In a blog post, Sarin looked at what an "adequately funded tax administrator" might mean for filers, noting that in other countries it's free and easy to file your taxes. In Sweden, for instance, many taxpayers just have to reply "yes" to a text to confirm their filing.

“ Such bull. They have billions of dollars. The question is how they use it.”

Totally agree. How much has been diverted for diversity and woke programming within the IRS?

Yea the IRS building was filled with ancient, yellowed IBM PS/2 computers.
Each one crammed to the max with dust like a over-stuffed Hoover bag.

Hardest place to get into as well, i basically had to wait WAY out on the sidewalk for my contact to come out and sign me in.
The place really sucked..

That was 2 years ago. Inexcusable crap.

I believe in the same level of accountability. Which I know will never happen in America, but I’ll tilt that windmill. Cops and civilians. The IRS and civilians. You name it. If I can’t get away with it they shouldn’t either.

They also have a nice bridge for sale in NY and it comes with a bag of magic beans.

They shouldn’t have bought all those shotguns and crates of ammo. Maybe a few more clerks would do. And dump the union.

This is another job for the Congress coming in 2023. Scrap the present system and institute a flat tax. This in sheer non-sense.

How about crying me an ocean?

I have been waiting for two years now for a refund of an inproperly levied tax. They just quit sending apologies.

I have a suggestion for the fools, simplify the tax code and make it a flat tax. One card each payer. Better yet, s-can the entire IRS and just go to a VAT so everyone pays and everyone sees how much they are paying. Oh no! That would mean the fool citizens would get rightfully pissed off!

How would a national retail sales tax apply to the black market?

Crucial distinction: I said "black market money" and you said "black market".

If a guy sells dope, there is no way to tax that black market transaction (as you said) but once the drug dealer makes some profit, and buys himself some nice clothes, a nice car, and all kinds of things like that, all of his retail transactions (paid for with black market money) get taxed at a new rate (it wouldn't be a 5% sales tax: it would be more).

Currently, we all pay the 5% sales tax, and honest people pay income tax (black market profiteers don't). I say end the income tax and make everyone pay something like 15% on all retail sales. It balances out for everyone except the parasites who suddenly have skin in the game.

Those files on the bottom of the stacks, the ones they can’t reach and probably never will? One of those is my refund from two years ago.

To-date I have never been billed. That may change, but I think they can’t handle it. Too busy trying to service the idiots that comply.

They always find a way to bill me. The safe harbor is paying in 100% of prior year's tax due or 90% of current year's tax. My income varies by year so I can't get estimates perfect. Just last week I got a $1,500 bill for underpayment of estimated tax for the 2020 tax year. Perhaps you're paying during the course of the year through withholdings?

Incidentally, they still haven't cashed the $35k check I sent them in April for tax due with my 2021 return despite acknowledging that they received it. I guess they don't need the money. :-)

Nope, sorry, but inheritances have to be taxed too if everyone has skin in the game.
The money is the dead person’s money, not the beneficiary in the will. Inheritance law is one of the most common ways to escape taxes, especially with the now common scheme of setting up trusts. If you want your kids to get the wealth or property, make them joint owners with the right of survivorship.

Besides, inheritances are already taxed, above a certain value and income level, but the rich have ways of minimizing their exposure. Do you think Bill Gates and Warren Buffet will have most of their billion$ taxed away when they die?

I like the idea of the national sales tax, but if the income tax amendment is not repealed, we would end up with both eventually.

National Sales Tax.

And nothing else.

Nothing.

And the tax must be itemized on every receipt.

Inheritance law is one of the most common ways to escape taxes, especially with the now common scheme of setting up trusts.

Trusts don't really help escape taxes. The value of the property conveyed to the trust is subject to gift tax (subject to the annual exclusion amount, now $16k, per person) if made during life or is included in the gross estate if conveyed at death. The primary value of using trusts in estate planning is that they have the potential to keep increases in value of the principal out of the grantor's gross estate. This can be a significant benefit if appreciating assets are contributed.

If you want your kids to get the wealth or property, make them joint owners with the right of survivorship.

That doesn't help. The entire value of jointly held property with right of survivorship is included in the gross estate of the first to die.

Besides, inheritances are already taxed, above a certain value and income level, but the rich have ways of minimizing their exposure. Do you think Bill Gates and Warren Buffet will have most of their billion$ taxed away when they die?

The current exclusion amount is $12.06 million per individual and $24.12 million per couple. That means a married couple could give away during life and at death a total of $24.12 million before paying any gift or estate tax. Obviously, most people will not be paying these taxes.
