The IRS is underfunded and understaffed, and had to deal with new pandemic responsibilities.
The result has been a massive backlog of unprocessed tax returns, many of them on paper.
A photo from the agency's Austin facility shows just how much paper the IRS is dealing with.
The IRS is still full of paper.
The agency has been contending with a historic backlog of unprocessed tax returns amidst new pandemic responsibilities, understaffing, and underfunding. The result: A massive build-up of unprocessed tax returns, many of which belong to Americans who have been waiting on refund checks.
Natasha Sarin, a tax policy and implementation counselor at the Treasury Department, shared a photo on Twitter of the cafeteria at the IRS's Austin site. In it, the room is "overrun" with paper returns awaiting employees.....
Increased funding for the IRS could make filing a lot more efficient, according to the Treasury Department. In a blog post, Sarin looked at what an "adequately funded tax administrator" might mean for filers, noting that in other countries it's free and easy to file your taxes. In Sweden, for instance, many taxpayers just have to reply "yes" to a text to confirm their filing.

Cry me a river. In 1970 all returns were paper and therefore had to be done manually.
Maybe it’s time for a flat tax and some IRS agents to #LearnToCode?
They had no trouble whatsoever sending me a reminder of what I owe. Very efficient with that...
Switch to a national retail sales tax and cancel the income tax. Lot less paper. And the black market money gets taxed like any other money. And poor people pay taxes (as they should).
Such bull. They have billions of dollars. The question is how they use it. No government agency is underfunded. They either use their money for the right purpose or they waste on woke programs and investigating republicans. But the lack of money is never an issue.
They lost me even before the end of the first sentence.
and the Illegals all over the world get their free money within 2 weeks
Yes, this agency and the entire income tax system are long overdue for elimination - no matter how much control over social behavior the politicians subsequently lose.
Are they sure that’s not just a picture of the the card copy our current tax code?
The 10,000 new agents being added since march 2022 just won’t be enough I guess.
How about instead of taxing productivity (rich dont have income) we tax consumption? Everyone will then have some skin in the game.
“They had no trouble whatsoever sending me a reminder of what I owe. Very efficient with that...”
Tell them it’s in the cafeteria holding pen...
They cashed my check immediately.
BY NOT PROCESSING these returns, Biden & group are holding onto $$$$$$$$$ that belongs to Americans.
IS he hiding MORE SHORTAGES?????
Politicized, weaponized, and a thorn in the side of all. It’s overfunded by 100%. When will a real politician try to abolish the IRS and impose a simple nationwide sales tax? I know... it’s a rhetorical question.
AND——YOU had to pay interest & penalties....
NONE of that for the late refunds.
“””new pandemic responsibilities, understaffing, and underfunding.”””
This is typical blather from any government agency. The IRS is not unique.
From local school teachers to city employees to state employees to federal employees, they all complain about how they are understaffed and underpaid.
What is missing in the government employment picture is the total lack of REORGANIZING DEPARTMENTS and getting rid of non-productive employees and getting rid of jobs that are no longer necessary.
The government employee unions protect their people.
I haven’t gotten a refund in 25 years. My take is that if I’m owed a refund it means I had too much taken out over the year.
No, learning how to do more with less makes you more efficient. Simply throwing more bodies at old inefficient processes doesn't make anything more efficient.
The only thing the IRS excels at is destroying conservative people and organizations.
No government department - anywhere - is underfunded and understaffed.
