Trump says he would look ‘very, very seriously’ at pardons for Jan 6 defendants if reelected

Former President Trump said on Friday that he would look “very, very seriously” at pardoning those charged in connection with storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, if he ran for and became president again.

Speaking during a Faith and Freedom event in Nashville, Tenn., Trump said the defendants charged in the Capitol riot were “having their lives totally destroyed and being treated worse than terrorists and murderers,” claiming that most had been “charged with parading through the Capitol.”

“And if I become president, someday if I decide to do it, I will be looking at them very, very seriously for pardons. Very, very seriously,” he added.

Trump has not yet announced whether he will run for president again in 2024, though he has at times teased the possibility that he will.

The former president has previously said that if he ran for president again and won, he would “treat those people from Jan. 6 fairly,” including potentially giving pardons to defendants charged in the riot.

One of his close allies, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), signaled after Trump made those earlier comments that he thought the idea of offering pardons to Capitol riot defendants was “inappropriate,” leading the former president to call the South Carolina Republican a “RINO,” or “Republican in name only.”

The former president’s Friday remarks come amid a slate of public hearings this month from the the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot.

During its latest hearing on Thursday, the panel showed evidence that conservative lawyer John Eastman, who advised Trump on a plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election, sought a pardon from the White House following the Jan. 6 attack.

“He now lays down the gauntlet for DeSantis. Will be interesting...”

If Trumps runs, DeSantis won’t. And we all know it.

The shooting was ruled to be justified so there's nothing to charge Byrd with.

"Ruled?" AFAIK the politically corrupt DOJ declined to prosecute. If you are going to use that word it should be in the context of of a court ruling.

Byrd is a murderer who is protected by a Marxist style commie Justice system.

I want him to sentenced to ride a bicycle between Charlottesville and Raliegh Durham to see if he makes it.

Both the DOJ and the Capitol Police ruled that the shooting was justified.

If you are going to use that word it should be in the context of of a court ruling.

Local police departments and prosecutors rule on police shootings all the time without the courts getting involved.

He's a police officer who shot and killed an unarmed suspect and got away with it. Don't pretend like it doesn't happen all the time.

IIRC Nixon was already about to be impeached from all the Watergate stuff exposed. My point is the crimes have to be defined and known, even if not proven in court of law.

A president should not be granting pardons in advance, IN CASE SOME CRIMES MAY GET DISCOVERED in future. During the 14 days Trump was in office after Jan 6th, to my knowledge there were no mass indictments of those who entered the capitol building without permission.

Ok. “ruling” is ambiguous but your posts suggest that there is no way to indict Byrd. What is the evidence that Byrd did not commit a crime? Compare that to the political Jan 6 punishment for those who did not kill anybody.

Right now there isn't. The matter has been investigated and the finding was no crime was committed by Byrd.

What is the evidence that Byrd did not commit a crime? Compare that to the political Jan 6 punishment for those who did not kill anybody.

No, compare that past findings in police shootings all over the country. There are dozens, hundreds of cases where police shot and killed unarmed suspects and the shooting was ruled justified. Why should this be any different?

The matter has been investigated and the finding was no crime was committed by Byrd.

That won't stop the DOJ from investigating if they really want to make an example.

The govt and its local minions in this case punished some with a different political view who did not harm anyone. Are there any good reasons why Byrd's homicide was justified other than this mysterious "ruling?" Maybe you know something that I don't. For example, did a superior order Byrd to shoot? We may never know. I am not anywhere near convinced the investigation was legitimate.

I wouldn’t wait ‘til 2025. Where are these poor people’s lawyers. A writ of Habeas Corpus should have been issued a year ago. Cruel and unusual punishment, deprivation of basic constitutional rights, and some not even charged, or charged with minor crimes.

Well obviously you don't think it was justified. I don't think it was justified. But we don't have a say in the matter.

Keep in mind Trump was president only 14 days after Jan 6th.
I don’t think he had any inkling how many would face charges before he left WH. Most people inside the capitol building did not damage anything or committed any violence. It is the corrupt leftist infested Justice & FBI going overboard with indictments. Where is the investigation of why the building was left largely unprotected on Jan 6th? Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to be charged with deriliction if duty.

That’s true. Knowing how awful the other side is, he should have assumed that his supporters on site would be persecuted (and prosecuted). A blanket pardon for everyone would’ve been a good thing. Should-a would-a could-a ... too late now.

They did investigate and ruled that the shooting was justified.

At least they said they did. Maybe it wasn't Byrd's fault, but if so they should explain why.

Exactly. Most were arrested after he left. I’m curious how many were arrested before.
