Trump says he would look ‘very, very seriously’ at pardons for Jan 6 defendants if reelected

Former President Trump said on Friday that he would look “very, very seriously” at pardoning those charged in connection with storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, if he ran for and became president again.

Speaking during a Faith and Freedom event in Nashville, Tenn., Trump said the defendants charged in the Capitol riot were “having their lives totally destroyed and being treated worse than terrorists and murderers,” claiming that most had been “charged with parading through the Capitol.”

“And if I become president, someday if I decide to do it, I will be looking at them very, very seriously for pardons. Very, very seriously,” he added.

Trump has not yet announced whether he will run for president again in 2024, though he has at times teased the possibility that he will.

The former president has previously said that if he ran for president again and won, he would “treat those people from Jan. 6 fairly,” including potentially giving pardons to defendants charged in the riot.

One of his close allies, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), signaled after Trump made those earlier comments that he thought the idea of offering pardons to Capitol riot defendants was “inappropriate,” leading the former president to call the South Carolina Republican a “RINO,” or “Republican in name only.”

The former president’s Friday remarks come amid a slate of public hearings this month from the the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot.

During its latest hearing on Thursday, the panel showed evidence that conservative lawyer John Eastman, who advised Trump on a plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election, sought a pardon from the White House following the Jan. 6 attack.

Pardon me, Mr. President, but if you are re-elected in 2024 I would hope that your pen has sufficient ink for you to give a pardon to an Australian citizen whose extradition to the United States was just approved by the British government.

Julian Assange Is a journalist, not a Soviet spy.

He’s not on the payroll of a big left wing publication such as the NewYork Times where leaks are published with impunity. He has no axe to grind, only a burning desire to reveal to the public certain things our rulers would like to keep to themselves.

For this he will be charged with espionage and likely convicted, to spend the rest of his life in a federal prison.

So much for the First Amendment freedom of the press.

“He should of pardoned them and everyone in his administration before leaving office. Completely dropped the ball on that.”

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Pardoning everyone involved would be nice, however prosecute Michael Byrd for the murder of Ashli Babbitt and let him rot in prison has got to come first.

And oh, a ‘hate’ crime too.

Plus there wasn’t much for Trump to go on TO pardon at the time. A few were looking at trespassing and disorderly conduct charges that nobody was thinking was serious enough for pardoning. Then some alleged assaults on police that would be stupid to pardon.

People came to protest peacefully and that is their right.

The nonsense with NOT sorting out the peaceful from the violent and locking up everyone who got swept up or stood on the capitol grounds on Junuary 6 and throwing away the key and treating them worse then terrorists in Guantanemo Bay started under BIDEN.

It is a bunch of revisionist history that this is Trump’s fault and not the Biden regime using January 6 people as political prisoners.

*** He could’ve done that any time before 1/20/2021@11:59AM. He should’ve done that by that time. ***

What you said. Sorry he alluded to an Assange pardon, but wimped out on that, getting out of Syria, but then turned into “take their oil”. Why would I believe him on anything about January 6th?

Fool me once.....

You can’t pardon anyone before they are charged.
On Jan 6th, 2020, Trump was almost done with his term,
and none of the people were yet charged.

Plus...

There was a post on FR that said Trump didn’t pardon any rioters. Nobody on FR voiced any disagreement or concern.

Much to the media’s surprise, rioters, relatives, and Trump himself got no Trump pardons
1/20/2021
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3927072/posts

Then there was another post on FR from a rioter asking for a pardon and most made fun of the request for pardon, they call the people who were at January 6 dumb and said they deserve what they get and they probably weren’t even Trump supporters...

‘I’m facing a prison sentence’: US Capitol rioters plead with Trump for pardons

Way too much revisionist history going on right now.

He can’t pardon someone who isn’t convicted if I understand correctly. And if he gets elected the creeps in DC would keep them in prison without charges or a trial his entire term

Trump should be providing lawyers to every one of those people as I speak. It should be free of charge if he really wants to help.

I knew that before people went. All the signs were there.

If no one went inside the Capitol or broke windows things could have been different.

I understand we the people do own that place.

The Washington elites do not believe that is so.
