The Washington Commanders have fined defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $100,000 following his comments earlier in the week that referred to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol as a "dustup" and compared that day to "riots, looting, burning" during protests in the summer of 2020.
In a statement, Washington coach Ron Rivera said he met with Del Rio on Friday morning to express his disappointment in the coordinator's comments.
"His comments do not reflect the organization's views and are extremely hurtful to our great community here in the DMV," Rivera said. "As we saw last night in the hearings, what happened on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was an act of domestic terrorism. A group of citizens attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election, and as a result lives were lost and the Capitol building was damaged."
Rivera said Del Rio has a right to voice his opinion, "However, words have consequences and his words hurt a lot of people in our community."
"I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any equivalency between those who demanded justice in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the actions of those on January 6 who sought to topple our government," Rivera added. "... I feel strongly that after our conversation this morning, he will have a greater understanding for the impact of his language and the values our team stands for."

No 1A in sports???
And yet come fall Free Republic will have a plethora of NFL threads where NFL fanatics who spend their evenings and weekends glued to the sports channels, will endlessly wade through the meaningless minutia presented to them by an organization that diametrically opposes everything those same fans profess to value. It would be funny were it not so pathetic.
Tell them to cram their fine where the sun doesn’t shine…man up…
That’s what you get for apologizing. He started baking down shortly after he said it.
Dissent is no longer tolerated comrades!
Jack del Rio came out of a lower middle class town of Hayward, California, where he was early seen as as fine individual and a noted football player. He received s scholarship to USC where again he was an outstanding football player. Then on the NFL and to its coaching ranks. Throughout, del Rio was a class individual. One can search forever and never find a statement maligning his character. Thus, this fine proves a number of things: Ron Rivera is a coward; the Washigton team is deservedly reviled; the NFL is even more cowardly than Rivera. Finally, del Rio took one for the League, but shouldn’t have.
If one of my employees said, outside of the workplace, something that I didn’t approve of, like, oh, say, “Orange Man Bad,” and I fired that libtard for it, I’d be sued in two minutes and deservedly so.
If, however, that employee said it directly to one of my clients on my dime, I’d fire his ass and collect attorneys fees for the waste of time in a frivolous lawsuit.
First Amendment is supposed to apply to government...Not private businesses...
Washington team is a private business...It is not breaking any law by fining Mr. Del Rio...
I think Coach Ron Rivera was concerned about his black players getting angry about what Del Rio stated...Rivera had to do something to calm his black players...By punishing Del Rio...
I guess if a person wants to work as an NFL coach he cannot do certain things...Like expressing conservative point of view...
Am I displeased that Del Rio apologized? No...I understand what he did...He wants to keep his present job...I do not know if I want blame him for worrying about his job...After all, he is not getting money from FR members if he is unemployed...
When DelRio was with KC he road up to reinforce the Player’s Union picket line in the back of struck with a loaded shotgun. I don’t think of him other than as a blow-hard.
Cancel culture still alive and well....
Dude’s contract certainly has an anti-disparagement clause that is being used to justify this $100k fine.
Problem is that “bringing disrepute upon the organization / doesn’t align with organization values” is so vague it can be interpreted to cover just about anything, which in legal terms makes it “unenforceable”. Not that any coach or player who is currently employed will risk a court case - filing it alone, even if you win, means your career is over.
That being said, these comments are clearly opinion about matters in the public sphere. There is NO WAY any judge worth a salt would enforce it.
So this is punishment for being a realist who sees the world as it is. And that’s that.
[I know, your gonna say ‘what about lefty judges’. You’re right. Chances are probably 50-50 you’d get a lefty vs. an actual jurist.]
The entire NFL is a WOKE nightmare.
Why do rational folks still support them financially ?
Commanders?! Isn’t that racist against persons of a lower military rank?
Cuck convention.

What is a Washington Commanders. Hockey? Soccer?
The Washington Commies are the former Washington Redskins NFL team.
Well, they are the Washington Commies, what so you expect?
I initially thought it was a story involving a minor league sports team. Then I realized that the “Washington Commanders” is a real NFL team that used to be the Redskins.
Seriously … Why would anyone employed by a silly organization like this expect to be treated objectively?
