Greg Norman has revealed that Tiger Woods has turned down a figure just short of $1 billion to join his Saudi-backed golf tour.
One of the most divisive episodes in the history of the sport took a dramatic turn on Monday when it was confirmed that Phil Mickleson had signed up to be the poster boy of Norman's revolution. The six-time major champion will now play in the tour's inaugural event at The Centurion Club at St Albans this week.
It will be his first event since announcing an indefinite break from the sport in January, following comments where he described the state of Saudi Arabia as 'scary motherf*****s'. That was despite initially accusing the PGA Tour of 'obnoxious greed'.
As a result, he missed the US Masters and last month's US PGA, despite being defending champion. And now, the American accepting a deal to join the rebel circuit represents a seismic capture for Norman.
However, the Australian has admitted he failed in a bid to attract the most marketable golfer in the history of the sport. The career of Woods, 46, appeared in jeopardy following his high-speed car crash in February, but he remarkably returned to play at Augusta in April.
And his global appeal was still evident, with his comeback signified by a mass frenzy of interest and support. He further defied doubters by entering the second major of the year at Southern Hills, but was in clear physical difficulty and withdrew after three rounds.

Not familiar with PGA and how they operate their tournament. Maybe Mickelson has a point. Competition is a good thing.
e doesn’t need money - just a chauffeur and a few blond super models.
……………………..
Wrong! That’s the last thing he needs. He needs Jesus and not a “few blond super models” because that’s what made him such a disgraced loser.
It’s not the same Japan that executed prisoners, bombed cities, etc.
C’mon you know the point I’m making
What if it were other slimeballs, like the KKK or the Mafia? Suppose they found a diamond mine under their headquarters and now had billions to start a new sports league, would you accept their money?
And then falsely claim “I don’t know nothing about politics” or “I gotta look after my family”, like the golfers are doing?
Not hardly. Saudi’s have crazy money they turn ocean water into fresh and grow grass with it. They could care less how much it costs per cubic meter. Our dear leader just begged then can we have some more oil please like Oliver Pip. You can see the grass from space.

Well they play in America, American politics are hardly free from corruption.
Johnny Miller came hanging around, asking for lessons...
LOL, a fine explanation.
I believe they rescinded that last month.
Saudis see the US collapsing and are eyeing the opportunity to lure away professional golf and make it their own.
Players see the US collapsing and are securing their future with the very, very well funded replacement league.
Whose gonna play the US Open if the Saudis have a competing tournament with 10x the prize money? And something less than an effective 65%-70% tax rate [don’t bother me with ‘residency’ - whose not gonna move their ‘residence’ to St. Lucia to save $hundreds of million$ in taxes]? And no trannies on the fairway? Only those who weren’t invited, that’s who.
As has been true for all of history, gold has a way of diverting attention away from the payer’s ugliness. Thinking otherwise is naïve.
I watched every day of the masters this year. Woods was struggling so bad to walk on Friday I expected him to quit before the round was over....I’ve never been a tiger woods fan by any stretch but man that was hard to watch.
Since that I’ve gained a bit more respect and empathy for how bad he was injured.
Also in watching interviews during the masters he seems to have matured and found some humility.
Yep, I wonder how FBI agents sleep at night.
His competitive career is over, that's obvious. I suspect some of that influences his humility, and some of it comes from maturity.
You do know of course that Donald Trump is a partner in this enterprise, and that two of the events will be played at his golf courses. Right?
Considering how the PGA treated him, it makes perfect sense.
How many tour players will be arrested for smuggling liquor into the kingdom?
Yeah it was quite a contrast from when I saw him play first hand back in the 90s here in North Florida.
The behavior I saw back then could only be described as him being a complete and total jackass.
I saw him treat his caddy in ways that no one should have to tolerate.
I don’t believe in karma but I do believe life has a way of catching up to you....and it looks like his has.
“Saudi is featured and expect it and other muzzy countries to be contracted play.”
Googling takes about 10 seconds and makes your posts look intelligent.
And Tiger has a wonderful son, Charlie, who is a fabulous golfer at 12. I saw the Father and Son tourney earlier this year. They almost won because Charlie is outstanding, got 2nd.
Tiger has all the money he’ll ever need, but loves his kids more than he loves $$.
