California may be the bluest state in the nation, but it now finds itself home to two of the most powerful and disruptive voices on the right. Those disruptors are a pair of conservative Catholic archbishops from distinctly liberal San Francisco and Los Angeles: Salvatore Cordileone and Jose Gomez. They may be out-of-step with the people in their pews, but that hasn’t prevented them from making headlines by diving into politics and the culture wars.

No, they're just getting back to being Catholic. And I'm old enough to remember when the Pope was Catholic.
Friendship with the Lord is enmity towards progressivism.
... is a logical take on the more familiar form of the phrase from Scripture.
A Catholic Bishop has no business aiming to be “in step” with the people in his diocese. The Church is not a corporation needing to please a customer base.
“ They may be out-of-step with the people in their pews”
The hill is out of step on at least two accounts here
One, they think the Catholic Church is a democracy. It is not. Never will be
Two the people in the pews? Or the people who subscribe to liberal publications like the hill who say they are Catholic or people who attend mass regularly. They are not the same
“They may be out-of-step with the people in their pews...”
I confess I’m not a theologian like Whoopi Goldberg (not your job, dude) but I wasn’t aware that church leaders are supposed to follow mores of their parishioners rather than lead them to what the Church teaches.
Priests need to make a bigger deal about stuff like abortion in their homilies during mass. Nancy maybe this issue a public scandal not the archbishop.
Welcome to free republic.
AMEN!!!! Bring Back BENEDICT!!!!
Why doesn’t “The Hill” just change their name to “The Democrat” and be done with it?
Good comment!
As for the “culture wars” nonsense, it is clear that the Dem Party sees “culture” as just the leftist zeitgeist of the moment, and nothing to do with ethics or morality.
Fortunately, the Archbishop sees that it has everything to do with ethics and morality.
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
The catholic church was targeted for destruction decades ago and has been infiltrated by leftists at all levels from pedophile priests all the way to the pope
The problem with Pelosi and Biden and any other political “catholic” who professes the faith and manifestly ignores its dogma is they have the power to influence and pass laws contrary to Catholicism.
Joe-in-the-Pew may agree with her and back abortion, and while Joe is wrong, he has no power.
She does.
Saying abortion and the death penalty are akin is specious and an exercise in mendacity.
This may be the dumbest thing ever written on The Hill. No wonder they don’t permit comments.
The Hill is a left wing rag.
Few people have less respect for the RomoChurch than I do. I am also pro-choice. But I will absolutely defend their right in a free society to advocate their views on abortion and enforce loyalty from their congregants. If that’s too tough for Pelosi and Biden, let them become Unitarians.
Abandoning their flock?
They have abandoned their flock for decades out there, this is finally the first step in trying to recover the flock that was left to wander aimlessly off their path!!!
