STATE WATCH New York cancels history Regents exam following Buffalo shooting BY MONIQUE BEALS - 05/24/22 2:05 PM ET SHARE TWEET ... MORE

The New York State Education Department announced on Tuesday that it would cancel a statewide standardized exam on U.S. history and government for high school students following the mass shooting in Buffalo.

“Our experts determined that there is content on the new Regents Examination in U.S. History & Government (Framework) that has the potential to compound student trauma caused by the violence in Buffalo, which created an unexpected and unintended context for the planned assessment,” the department said in a tweet about the decision to cancel the test, which was scheduled for June 1.

That the Regents exams even exist is stupid. Only State in the Union that still has them

History is the story of man’s inhumanity to man. If the material on the exam was ok before the events of Buffalo, the it is ok afterwards.

What is wrong with testing kids on what they have learned?

The school had regular tests and the Regents tests. You could take which ever you wanted. You just get a “worthless” Regents diploma if you take the Regents tests. Been there...done that.

The NYS US History Regents has been a politically correct trivial pursuit game for decades. No great loss.

It’s all just going through the motions. Education doesn’t matter. Snatch the smart kids as property of the state. The rest are already designated as pawns and burdens. Or something like that.

Does this indicate that those organizing the Regents exams were expecting a lot of test takers to flunk anyway?
So may as well postpone all the triggering and hurt feelings?

I went to high school in NYS and at the time, if you did well on the regents exams you could get a decent scholarship to any of the NYS colleges and universities. So the regents test might not be worthless.

How far the NYS Board of Regents has descended over the last 50 years.

WTF?!

This is absolutely proof or systemic racism when WHITE woke liberals think that all black students in the state aren’t capable of taking a test weeks after an incident!

When I went to the University of Buffalo in 1964 to 1968 the regents scholarship I got was for all the tuition. Not a bad deal then. I guess times have changed.

American history - down the memory hole.

I taught American history to junior high kids for nearly thirty years. After MO started state-wide testing for “No Child Left Behind”, the statewide history test was considered an optional extra. After a few years, my school dropped it to avoid the extra expense. Math, reading, and science; they were considered important, history, not so much.

So I didn’t have to sweat the test results like the other teachers. One year my principal told me that the real goal of my classes should be to improve the reading and math scores. Since I forced the kids to read the text books, no doubt I helped the reading scores, but it showed that the school’s real purpose was not to teach the kids, but rather to achieve ‘good’ test scores. I was close to retirement, so I just kept teaching my classes as I always had.

In many schools history is taught by a coach who has little or no background in history. It’s been that way for decades.
