Russia has warned that it will have to take “military-technical” steps in response to Finland’s application to join Nato.
The foreign ministry accused the military alliance of seeking to create “another flank for the military threat to our country”.
“Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move,” the ministry added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.
When asked whether Finland’s accession to the military alliance would be considered a threat toward Russia, Peskov answered: “Definitely”.
Earlier on Thursday, Finnish leaders said they were in favour of joining Nato and a formal decision would be made this weekend.
Finland, which shares an 810 mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually stepped up its cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a partner since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

They didn’t do anything when the Baltic states joined. Probably will not do anything if Finland joins.
Finland is gamboling bigtime.
I get why they are doing it. Their trading partners in the Baltic are facing destruction. But Russia has had a clear policy that Finland can not be allowed to align with anyone other than her.
That’s because those wars were politically run just like Vietnam.

Many don’t want the United States to become involved in the Russia-Ukraine war. Haven’t said that, that doesn’t mean that we can’t decide who we wish to win.

The problem is that they are all bluff. And now their bluff has been called. They’ve been screaming “nukes” for so long, yet Finland, Poland, the Baltics etc. know that theoretically there have been nukes in Kaliningrad since the 90s.

The logic behind some of your claims is peculiar. But, even if conceding their validity, do you believe that it justifies Russian conquest of Crimea and Ukraine? Just curious.

I don't know. That then makes the EU a potential military threat to the US in the future -- and that's not a good idea. Better for the EU to be beholden to the USA militarily.
