Imperial Japan ended at surrender. The state of Japan today is a different country, constitution and legal structure than the prior one. Culture is the similar, but even that is vastly different after the occupation. The German Reich, as a governmental body, ended in what was West Germany (some old East German colleagues used to joke they just swapped the swastika for the red star, but they had some wicked senses of humor). As a political entity, the prior German state was gone. Finland last territory, but not their government. It is a testament to them that they managed to fight the Soviets WITH the Nazi's, yet were able to keep their government together postwar. For over 70 years Finland kept a middle path as a western aligned nation neutral with the Soviets. It worked. After the liberation of Estonia and Lithuania, they increased their ties with their Baltic cousins. But in the last ten years or so they are seeing that Russia is wanting to reclaim Finland. The old order of neutrality is not holding. I am personally not sure that NATO membership is wise. The US is a broken reed, and it is not wise to really on us. But my Finnish cousins have been quietly saying for a few years now this was coming. I did not believe it till now.
