I was under the impression that laws were written by elected legislatures, not by appointed judges.

Gay ‘marriage’ was part of several states’ laws before it was imposed upon the entire nation by 5 of 9 Justices. If SCOTUS were to overturn gay ‘marriage’ the law would revert back to what it was before the decision. Gays could still get married in states where it was legal, and their marriages would have to be recognized even in states where it wasn’t.
