Masks aren’t required on U.S. flights for now after a federal judge lifted a nationwide mask mandate covering planes and other forms of public transportation, though the Department of Justice is filing an appeal to overturn the decision after a request from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The lifting of the mask mandate has led some people on social media to express their concerns for immunocompromised passengers.
Some medical experts, including Leana Wen, M.D., a public health professor at George Washington University and CNN medical analyst, have previously said that “one-way masking,” where someone is wearing a high-quality mask but others around them are not, still protects the wearer from COVID-19.
THE QUESTION Can wearing a mask help protect you from getting COVID-19, even if others aren’t wearing one?
THE SOURCES The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 3M, a company that manufactures masks and medical supplies Saralyn Mark, M.D., former senior medical advisor to the White House and American Medical Women's Association COVID-19 Lead Study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
THE ANSWER Yes, wearing a mask can help protect you from getting COVID-19, even if others aren’t wearing them. But experts say universal masking offers the most protection from COVID-19......
Cloth or single-use surgical masks, on the other hand, are “more about helping protect those around you as you talk, cough or sneeze.” Because cloth and surgical masks fit loosely on the face, they do not provide protection to the wearer from germs transmitted by coughs or sneezes, 3M says.

This is useful, if someone is wearing a cloth mask it lets you know are dealing with a rat.
Did you see the recent story of the 5 foot long Ball Python found on a shelf in WalWart? If their Covid protocols aren’t keeping pythons out, why would I trust their efforts to keep covid out?
Thank you.
You mean the company (3M) with a vested interest in selling masks says, wait for it, you should wear a mask.
I was tracking the CDC’s data website during Covid. I live in the only county in our state that had a mask requirement for nearly the entire two years. Compared to the rest of the maskless state, there was absolutely no statistically significant difference in Covid numbers between the masked area of the state and the rest of the state which was unmasked.
It is a lie to say that masks are effective against Covid, just as it was, and is, a lie to say that the vaccines are safe and effective.
To be 100% sure; a plastic dry cleaners bag over the head and taped securely around the neck.
If you’re wearing a mask to protect me. You need to stay indoors until you’re well enough to come in contact closer than the arbitrary (anti) social distance.
I like to use the analogy of throwing a handful of sand at a chain link fence. Sure--a grain or two may hit a wire and bounce back. But that won't stop you from getting infected.
Actually, that might work where I used to live down on the coast by Corpus Christi.
True. The cloth masks that most people wear do nothing to stop aerosolized particles. They may stop droplets...if someone VERY near to you sneezes of coughs. And they tell us that the virus spreads through aerosolized particles...so all the cloth masked people are given a false sense of protection and a headache.
I had bumble bee’s getting into my backyard. I built a chain link fence to keep them out! Genius!
I thought the masks were to prevent a carrier from spreading the virus? They can’t make up their minds.
“ led some people on social media to express their concerns for immunocompromised passengers.”
Concern trolls are concerned. Bubble Boy’s problems are not mine.
Growing up playing outside in the ‘70s and ‘80s, developing a proper immune system might have helped.
To be REALLY safe I recommend wearing a Level-A Containment Suit and a SCBU at all times.
Shorter growing season here in Colorado.
How about all the plastic particles that the masks put in your lungs?
just a snippet from this incredibly unscientific study:
his study used a test-negative case-control design, enrolling persons who received a positive (case-participants) or negative (control-participants) SARS-CoV-2 test result, from among all California residents, without age restriction, who received a molecular test result for SARS-CoV-2 during February 18–December 1, 2021 (5). Potential case-participants were randomly selected from among all persons who received a positive test result during the previous 48 hours and were invited to participate by telephone. For each enrolled case-participant, interviewers enrolled one control-participant matched by age group, sex, and state region; thus, interviewers were not blinded to participants’ SARS-CoV-2 infection status. Participants who self-reported having received a previous positive test result (molecular, antigen, or serologic) or clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 were not eligible to participate. During February 18–December 1, 2021, a total of 1,528 case-participants and 1,511 control-participants were enrolled in the study among attempted calls placed to 11,387 case- and 17,051 control-participants (response rates were 13.4% and 8.9%, respectively).
After obtaining informed consent from participants, interviewers administered a telephone questionnaire in English or Spanish. All participants were asked to indicate whether they had been in indoor public settings (e.g., retail stores, restaurants or bars, recreational facilities, public transit, salons, movie theaters, worship services, schools, or museums) in the 14 days preceding testing and whether they wore a face mask or res
LOL. “CNN medical analyst”
Well, as I sit here in a plane, 90% aren’t wearing masks....although a couple has their 3 young kids wearing masks AND a plastic faceshield. Smh.
I thought the polls said 60% will continue choosing to wear them.
BS.
