DeSantis threatens Disney’s special status in Florida

Ron DeSantis on Tuesday said that the state’s legislature will consider terminating the special status of a municipal district operated by Walt Disney Co., the Wall Street Journal reports.

It’s an escalation in the weeks-long feud between the Republican governor and Disney.

“We are expanding the call of what the state legislature will be considering this week,” DeSantis said, per Bloomberg. “They also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968, and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District.”

You must live near Gainesville…one of the things that amazed me when I lived there (I now live in St Augustine) is that nobody I knew or even met who worked at or was affiliated with UF went to the springs or even cared that these places existed- unless they were launching a campaign to stop bottled water. Tubing, the springs, etc. were all regarded as the provinces of lower beings, meaning non-university affiliated people.

I think the Disney attitude reflects this arrogance.

Mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Disney’s special breaks should have had a sunset clause to end them a long time ago. The sun will be setting soon on FL Disney.

Lots of alligator talk. Are there alligators in that river?

Yes, I’m a native and Disney was being built when I was a kid. It opened when I was 12, but by then we had moved to Gainesville. I call that period of time “Old Florida”, before it got so jam packed down there. I miss the moss on the trees and lots of stuff from the Old South. I used to crave boiled peanuts, but I’ve finally figured out how to freeze them and they are almost as good as freshly boiled. I DO LOVE the change of seasons in the Midwest, but I just wish that Winter didn’t last so long. The folks around here are genuine and kind, too, not that you can’t find that in the South.

'was affiliated with UF went to the springs or even cared that these places existed-'

That's weird. If you grew up in Florida as a boy, you lived on the water via the beach or river. Fishing, hunting, arrowheads, etc. Maybe just yankees didn't enjoy the outside, all crackers loved it.

Yep. All over. If bored head out with a flashlight and scan for eyes at night. Most are harmless and have been taken out by the long history of gator harvesting. All the really, huge gators come out of other states these days, Alabama of note.

That’s one of the things that drives me crazy when I go home to visit. Traffic is awful everywhere you go.

“I believe this doesn't kick in until early 2023. After the mid-terms when it can be quietly repealed.”

You must think DeSantis is kidding around. You don't know DeSantis.

This govnuh is not going to burnish his credentials and then unburnish them in a few months.

Would love to be a mouse in the corner of the executive suite today...this will END Disney! Imagine just having county law enforcement take over, how many complaints would no longer just disappear..

____________

this in no way is going to end Disney. Their profits will be slightly smaller, but they make hand over fist as it is.

If I ever move back, I may have to get one of those screened in cement ponds, but I can’t help it that I love living on the edge of water. So soothing. I think I would prefer the gulf if I could find a place that wasn’t so touristy. Gotta keep looking. Maybe I’ll find a needle in a haystack one of these days.

We are probably about the same age, my family moved to Newberry, FL just west of Gainesville when I was 10, grew up there working on the farms of my friends, picking watermelons, cropping tobacco, and bailing hay.

Close enough in age, for sure. My family is pretty blue collar. There was a time when my dad worked 4 jobs just to keep food on the table for a family of 8. Part of that was raising green peppers to sell at farmers markets sometimes. All of us kids had to work doing that as he was trying to get a family business off the ground. We made our way out of the hard times after several years. It wasn’t fun, but those were good life lessons. My kids don’t understand why I have a well stocked pantry (and then some).
