FRANKFORT, Ky. —

The Kentucky General Assembly moved forward with a bill banning transgender girls from competing in girls' sports, sending the measure to Gov. Andy Beshear and leading to an LGBTQ+ rights group to speak out in opposition.

Senate Bill 83 says, "An athletic activity or sport designated as 'girls' shall not be open to members of the male sex." The Republican-backed bill would ban transgender girls from participating in school sports that match their identity.

The bill applies to students in sixth grade to college.

According to SB 83, athletic eligibility would be determined by a student's birth certificate. Republicans in other states have passed similar measures.

After it passed the General Assembly, the Fairness Campaign in Kentucky called the efforts by the lawmakers "shameful." They are calling on Beshear to veto the measure.

Yes. How ironic they campaign for “fairness” of girls / women to have compete against boys / men.

Similar bill passed in Indiana was vetoed by Republican Governor Holcomb!

Dollar to a dime he doesn’t sign it.

I wonder if they have sufficient votes to override his veto.

If so, it will be a matter of hours before he goes to the state supreme court and asks them to set aside the veto override. And one hour after that when they do.

When this gender cr** started...it should have been nipped in the bud...Instead...they turned it into some kind of right?? Right to what?? Dress funny?? Say call me she or else. The whole thing is ridiculous. The courts got this wrong...in many ways.

Just like they got abortion wrong...calling it some right?? Right to kill a tiny human being...cuz you wanna??

They are not “transgender girls,” they are mentally ill boys.

It is a sad statement that we even need to pass this kind of legislation.
But we DO need to pass it.

So maybe, for these dudes, the doctors need to surgically cut out muscle mass so that the dude now has the same muscle mass as a woman/girl.
Then they will be equal.

Republicans probably know Beshear will make some kind of spectacle out of it which they can use as red meat for the base when Beshear tries to get reelcted next year.

I bet he doesn’t.

I think it just has to pass again to override. But there are tricks of waiting to veto to allow the clock to run out. Our legislature also can’t call itself into session.

There is no such thing as a transgender girl.

And while Beshear can veto the bill, the Republican supermajority in the General Assembly means that the governor’s decision can be overridden.

Yes.. R's have Super-Majorities in BOTH houses. We've over-riden him several times already.

I know they do, and I know they have. Wonder if there will be defectors - not likely I think.

But, with just a few days left, what happens if Baby Doc Beshear vetoes it when there is no time left in the session for the legislature to have an override vote?

Does the state constitution make any allowances for that?

Good question... not sure about that. The initial votes were far above the override threshold. I can't see anyone changing on this one.
