Why some GOP voters just can't quit Trump
The Hill ^ | Mar 17, 2022 | Bernard Goldberg

Posted on 03/17/2022 12:14:20 PM PDT by where's_the_Outrage?

We humans are wired in such a way as to look out for our best interests. It's how we survive. But sometimes we go off the rails and do things that can cause us more harm than good. And yes, I'm thinking of the love and affection some Republicans still have for Donald Trump, despite all the harm he has done to them and the party.

You'd think that after losing the House during his presidency, and losing the presidency itself.....

Think about it this way: We are humans, after all, not robots. We don't always color inside the lines because coloring outside the lines makes us feel, well, independent. It's a way to be rebellious. Voting for Trump is the political version of coloring outside the lines.

Donald Trump stands for something important to his most loyal followers, the ones who are truly committed to him. They may not believe, as he claims to believe, that he's a "stable genius." They may not even believe that he's stable. But they believe something important about him nonetheless: that he's standing up to all those snooty liberal elites who condescendingly believe they're better than the "hayseeds" who live in flyover country and eat at chain restaurants and fly the flag on the Fourth of July.

Never underestimate the power - or the raw satisfaction - of getting even, of settling the score with smug "sophisticates" who think they're better than "ordinary" Americans. That's why Donald Trump is so popular even now, even after all the harm he has done to his party, even though he, more than anyone else, may be responsible for the progressive agenda that President Biden is pursuing. Trump, after all, is why Biden is president.

Bernard Goldberg is an Emmy and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University award-winning writer and journalist.

Tells me more than enough of what I need to know of this writer to tell me where he is coming from.

Some? Last I heard, Trump had an 86% approval rating within the GOP. And Goldberg damn well knows it.

Yeah never mind the best US economy since the 1950s produced by Trump, it is all just “get even with them” for us peons out here.

Really a very silly article by someone stuck inside the media/political bubble world.

Trump made the country work for the average person of all races and creeds rather making it work only for the uber rich and the politically connected. It really is just that simple

Hes the best option by far. Its that easy. The world was safer, the country was prosperous, people were content with their lives while he was in office.

Why cant people quit Biden, thats the actual mystery. Even now folks double down on their terrible choice...while having nothing to grasp on to except ....”because Trump”.

It’s easier to speculate than to ask Trump supporters.

Republicans picked up House seats! Very rare. Republicans did well all over the country, except at the top of the ticket for some strange reason.

I agree and I have 13 years on you. Reagan was a much better speaker and probably smarter but he just couldn’t get done what Trump did in spite of what he had to work against.

Gee, Goldberg, don’t you think it might be because he actually kept his campaign promises, or at least tried to, and prioritized Americans over illegal aliens?

Article seems to suggest by its title that people should be dumping Trump like everyone else is, so why aren’t some people doing it?

Stupid article.

"They just don’t get it."

Oh they get all right.
That's why we have absurd propaganda pieces like
we have just read from Goldberg. There has been a constant
stream of hate filled propaganda from the Left
and from the pseudo-Republican "conservative Right" to try to
separate Trump from his support in the country.

In his place they try to prop up that vacuous drugged-up
zombie Biden who is betraying America to enviro-crazies
the Chi-Comms, and the neo Soveits represented by the
wannabe Lord of all Slavs, Putin.
