A North Carolina school board voted unanimously Monday to approve an action plan after reported racial bullying in the district, including a student-organized mock auction of Black students.
A group of parents and community members had called on the Chatham County School District to make changes after several reported racial bullying instances at schools in the district.
In a Facebook post March 4, Ashley Palmer said her Black son told her that some of his classmates were sold in a mock slave auction at J.S. Waters School, which serves grades K-8.
"Our son experienced a slave auction by his classmates and when he opened up we were made aware that this type of stuff seems to be the norm so much that he didn't think it was worth sharing. His friend 'went for $350' and another student was the Slavemaster because he 'knew how to handle them.'" Palmer wrote in her post. She wrote that students also sang the n-word.
In a later post, Palmer said that the students involved in the auction received a one-day suspension, and alleges her son was assaulted by a classmate and has faced "continuous harassment" at the school since he reported the incident.
CNN was unable to reach Palmer for additional information.
During public comment at the Chatham County School Board meeting Monday, several students, parents and community members spoke to the board about their experiences with racism and concerns over the incident.
One mother, who said her son was one of the children allegedly sold in a mock slave auction, told the board about the conversation she had with him after hearing from another parent what happened.
"I asked my son why didn't he tell me? He responded with, 'Mom it wasn't a big deal,'"

Really happened or false accusation?
With schools and parents one can never be too sure.
It actually can be good way to instruct - showing everyone the inhumanity of people being auctioned and sold. But it’s a minefield for anyone trying to do this.
If it had been whitey it woulda been all-righee.

Those democrats love slavery.
It really shouldn’t be taught at all. I think everybody is cognizant enough to understand that wrong.
We should be focusing on how to treat each other right.
I was thinking this was evidence there still are some
Democrats in the area.
I do recall a school fundraiser auctioning off popular student volunteers and teacher volunteers as “slaves for a day.” The higher the bid the more prestige for the student or teacher. There wasn’t any racial component.
This sounds quite different, if it is accurate that black kids were singled out.
So... it would better if the kid went for $500?
They're pissed because the kid didn't bring a good price?
just a rouge teacher... right?
Who the hell thought that was a good idea?
Why do people have no sense of humor anymore ?
Yea, you’re probably right. Maybe some real-life reading about it.
Knew somebody would post that.
We used to have “slave auctions” as a fund raiser. Seniors were auctioned off for one day. The purchased person carried their “owner’s” books to class.
Sanctioned by the school and the board, and the parents didn’t have any issues with it either.
This happened to us almost every day in Phys Ed class.
The teacher would pick 2 students to represent different classes like Shirts and Skins.
The designated masters would bid for the slaves for their team, sometimes making trades.
I am still traumatized as I type this.
Can I get some kind of reparations,
P.s. my pe teacher gigi encouraged me do things with a horse, and then the ropes
Remember a documentary Blue eyes/ Brown eyes. A elementary school teacher ( with permission of parents ) divided the kids by eye color. For a day and a half one group was treated subservient to the other. She would later tell the kids she made a mistake and the other color eyes were really the better. I recall she ended it early because of the way the kids were affected. Note, all the kids in class were white, middle class families. The video is still avail on youtube.
Yea, I stand corrected on this.
