On Tuesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) reacted to President Joe Biden’s ban on U.S. imports of Russian oil and gas by stating that Congress should monitor the profits of oil companies and “profit margins should not go up. That’s just oil companies gouging when they do that. So, we’re going to be on them on this.”

It’s that kind of statement that discourages oil companies from investing in greater production.

Well, she did mention ‘profit margins’. That’s a start. Maybe she could be made to understand that as costs rise so should profits for future investments. Maybe? Nah. Probably not.
If that comment was meant for Senator Warren I apologize. Maybe next time put Warren's name in the comment so we know who you're talking to. No judgment because I've done it myself or my comment meant for the third-party look like it was directed at the poster.
Hopefully, peace will come quickly, and oil prices will go back to the old Biden administration level.
There is a risk that oil say bought at $120/barrel might become worth only $85/barrel. Hopefully, a really big risk.
This big risk should come with a profit margin proportional to the risk.

How can this woman possibly claim to know anything about economics. The way the free market rations scarce commodoties is price, which is set by demand. The price above the cost of production is called an “economic rent.” Perhaps its an unearned profit, but in a real free market, the profit would be reinvested in exploration and production to expand supply. This is classical economic theory going back to Ricardo.
