As hacking by nation-states has grown more pervasive in recent years, Microsoft has long called for the creation of a new Geneva Convention governing cyberspace.
But now, for the first time, the tech giant appears to be suggesting that cyberattacks tied to the war in Ukraine could potentially be considered war crimes under existing international law.
On Monday, Microsoft (MSFT) said that in the hours leading up to Russia's invasion, it detected a new form of "offensive and destructive" software targeting Ukrainian institutions. Microsoft also said it has observed a barrage of cyberattacks zeroing in on Ukraine's agricultural, commercial, finance and energy sectors.
"These attacks on civilian targets raise serious concerns under the Geneva Convention, and we have shared information with the Ukrainian government about each of them," wrote Microsoft president Brad Smith in a blog post.
Microsoft's underlying message? The years-long ethical debate surrounding cyberwar — and its impact on civilians — is no longer theoretical. It is here, it is real, and governments must figure out how to respond. (Microsoft declined to comment on whether it believes the hacks constitute actual breaches of the Geneva Convention.)
In 2017, Smith argued that the rise of transnational digital crime and the brazen Sony data breach attributed to North Korea showed how cyberspace "has become a potential new and global battleground."

When did Russia and Ukraine sign on the Geneva convention?
So who is doing all the attacking? Let me guess, the global cabal and Joey.
They are looking to start a color revolution is Russia so they can install a Klaus Schwab puppet to enslave people like they are doing in the West.
"I Never Heard of It!"
Ping
Klaus came out for Ukraine already, as did Soros.

If we are concerned about the Geneva Convention, can we also be concerned about the Nuremberg Code?
We are concerned with what the globalists and CNN tell us to be concerned with, especially here.
i cant get into capital one website so they are on the attack.
And when did Microsoft become the arbiter of what constitutes a violation? This is so strange.
Can we ask for Hillary’s emails again?
Maybe if Microsoft would actually release an OS that actually has a decent level of security it would be less of a concern...
Just watched this on Sunday! :)
much better than the remake.
And just like that Liberals love Red Dawn.
Since when did Microsoft become a wold-class political and moral conscience?
Once you get OneDrive working properly, THEN you can opine on world affairs.
Get back to work!
I didn't think so.
Did Microtyrants have anything to say about the hacking of GiveSendGo?
Thought not.
What a bunch of morons. The Geneva Conventions don’t have jack-squat to do with the conduct of warfare, they’re about treatment of prisoners of war and enemy wounded. Only the Hague Accords address the conduct of warfare.
Ban dum-dum bullets and hollow points? That’s Hague, NOT GENEVA.
