A dangerous debate on gun reform is brewing in Indiana. Despite appeals raised directly by local law enforcement leaders, for the second time in two years the state’s Republican-dominated legislature attempted to advance a controversial proposal that would eliminate permit requirements to carry a handgun in the state.
In its original form, this bill would allow tens of thousands of residents who’ve never completed a background check to now be able to openly carry a handgun in public.
While I’m pleased to report that a state Senate panel nixed this controversial permitless measure from the bill in a close vote last week, it is far from the end of this eight-year effort by Indiana House Republicans.
To Illinois residents, it may sound heartening that Indiana’s already lax gun laws stop at state lines. But the harsh reality is that guns do not.

The neighbors have low crime. Chicago is a cesspool of criminal activity 24/7. I am thinking it is not the guns.
So I guess the Dakotas or Montana or Vermont or Maine or New Hampshire are to blame for drugs and illiteracy and welfare dependency and other things for black lives to not really matter in Chicago. Okay, I got it now.
And as for the "neighboring state" thing...Rat Party Headquarters doesn't seem to care how many guns are coming into the country since they swung open the gates of our southern border.
Kinda hard to do “universal background checks” while inviting people to enter the country illegally and undocumented.
I've seen the RCMP on the north side (I once had a short chat with one (standing about 5 feet apart),asking him questions about the RCMP) and the US Customs Service is always patrolling the southern side.Apart from the cameras and sensors they have on both sides you could literally stroll across at that library.
Oops, you are crazy, since you are a Democrat!
Under Democrat Newman's logic, Illinois should rule its neighboring states. Given the "Chicago way" and enormous corruption of Illinois, perhaps the surrounding states should be allowed to rule Illinois, in a "turnabout's fair play" manner?
But it does seem strange that all those neighboring states cities and counties have far lower gun deaths per capita than -- hmm -- Chicago.
“Freedom is dangerous.”
If you trust a 16 year-old with a 4000 lb sharp-edged box with 200 hp,I think you can trust their parents with a gun. Maybe the murder rate in VT, NH, ME or WY might be instructive.
The “Neighboring State” nonsense again. It is illegal under Federal Law to buy a handgun across state lines.
From an anti-gun site...

“Handguns. Under federal law, anyone who does not have a federal gun dealer license, or other Federal Firearms License (FFL), is generally prohibited from acquiring a handgun directly from a seller or transferor who resides in a different state.”
Illinois politicians are not satisfied with screwing up their own state. They want to screw up all the others as well.
No, gun laws are only as good as the enforcement of the laws. In Illinois, they don’t want to arrest people, so the bad guys do what they want.
Go ring up some Chicago gang bangers.
—the usual “neighboring state” claim—
Maybe it’s the “lax” gun control laws in neighboring States keeping the high crime rate in Illinois from spreading.
