WA Senate OKs ban on sales of high-capacity gun ammunition

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state Senate has voted to ban the manufacture, distribution and sale of firearm magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The Seattle Times reports if the bill passes the House and becomes law, the ban would limit not just magazines for rifles that hold 20 or 30 rounds, but for a host of semiautomatic pistols, which often carry more than 10 rounds. The late Wednesday vote on Senate Bill 5078 by the Senate’s Democratic majority marks the first time such a bill has passed a floor vote at the Legislature. For years, restrictions on firearm magazines have been a top priority for many Democrats and advocates of stricter gun regulations. Conservatives and gun-rights advocates have meanwhile assailed such laws as not effective and an infringement on the Second Amendment. The legislation — which passed 28-20 — was requested by state Attorney General Bob Ferguson. Whether Democrats can get the proposal through the House by the end of the legislative session — which concludes March 10 — remains unclear. In a regularly-scheduled meeting with reporters hours before the bill passed, House Speaker Laurie Jinkins, D-Tacoma, didn’t commit to giving SB 5078 a floor vote in that chamber.

Must be directed at those single rounds that contain more than 10 tips...

They were always a bitch to load into mags anyway...

Stop using their lingo and maybe we’d do okay.

You call it high capacity and they win.

Its an insert capacity here, round mag and be done with it

So, if this is signed into law, the next time I sail from Gray’s Harbor to Aberdeen to kill an enemy I need to make sure my mags hold less than 10 rounds?

I’ll just bring 30 instead of the usual 25.

I’m actually thinking there really may be. After all, one theorized reason for the cruelty and fall of the Roman Empire was high levels of lead in Rome’s water supply.

... n short this is a magazine ban.

Incorrect. The article states it also includes handguns with capacities greater than 10 rounds.

If I read this correctly it does not ban ownership, just manufacture, sale, and distribution. Sounds like a job for a magazine store just across the Idaho border. They could also sell People, Better Homes and Gardens, Guns and Ammo etc.

I’m curious. What handgun holds ten rounds without the use of a magazine?

So, this is ammo that can only be used in high-capacity guns.

BTW, the court recently ruled that CA’s ban on high-cap magazines was not constitutional.

All my handguns have a capacity of 1 without a magazine (no, I don’t own a revolver).

“what in the heck is high capacity ammo?”

I was wondering the same thing. My first thought was that if there was a gun that had a high capacity magazine in a certain caliber, then the ammunition was out lawed. Kind of like Mexico, where all military calibers are forbidden. Having said that, it would pretty much outlaw almost every caliber since almost every modern caliber cartridge has been used at one time or another in a high capacity gun. The only one I have not seen is the 38 Super (which is a really good caliber and very popular in Mexico). Heck, automatics have even been chambered in 38 Special and the 357.
