A Maryland police officer is being hailed as a hero after saving a child from being hit by a car and taking the brunt of the impact herself.
The dramatic scene was caught on surveillance video.
The footage shows Cpl. Annette L. Goodyear of North East, on crossing guard duty on Friday, holding up a hand to stop traffic. As a middle school student walked through the crosswalk, a car blew into the intersection. Goodyear pushed the child out of the way only to be hit by the car herself.
Although the footage shows her falling hard to the pavement, Cecil County Public Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Lawson said on Twitter that Goodyear was treated and released and is doing well.
“It was strange. As I’m lying there I’m thinking to myself this actually did happen. I didn’t even know what to think about at that point,” Goodyear told Fox 5. “It didn’t seem real as it was happening.”
The child was not injured.
CBS Baltimore reported that the driver was given multiple citations, including negligent driving, failure to stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk and an expired registration.
The town’s website said Goodyear has been with the department since 2008, and was its first female officer.
Goodyear told Fox 5 that after leaving the hospital, she went to check on the girl, who was too shaken to go to school and went home instead.
“She came down the stairs saw me standing there and as she was walking toward the door she was getting teary-eyed, and you could see it and when she got teary-eyed, then her dad started getting teary-eyed, and we all started at that point,” Goodyear told the station. “I was just so thankful she was standing there and that she was OK.”

MD ping.
The driver should have been arrested.
...and given a sternly worded lecture.
“Expired registration”….hmmmm….could be illegals?
> The driver should have been arrested. <
Given this happened in the People’s Republic of Maryland, I’m surprised that the cop and the little girl weren’t arrested.
“When I was seventeen
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for small town girls
And soft summer nights
We’d hide from the lights
On the village green
When I was seventeen...” (Written by Ervin Drake)
Actually now I saw it.
Notice it is very wet out.
It was a largish woman who at least got out of the car and checked on her. And she looks white, though poor quality film.
Perhaps that’s why she only got citations….not hit and run.
It’s Cecil County. Not very commie.
I would think she’d get some kind of ticket rather than just citing, because that’s pretty bad. But she did not hit and run, so there is that.
Police are not safe regardless the duty. Bad stuff happens everywhere.
How about AWDW, assault on a police officer, attempted murder?
The driver had to have been texting. Stupid bordering on criminal.
Hang up and drive stupid!!
I’m thinking a better headline might be:
Black police officer hit by car driven by a white Karen.
Alert crossing guard.
However, pedestrians NEED to be situationally aware. Kid should’ve been paying attention as well. There is no forcefield protecting them in a crosswalk.
Three comments:
1) The guard’s quick reaction saved the child from serious injury. She is to be commended for that reaction.
2) The driver should be charged, as she was negligent.
3) The guard did make a mistake. Watch her again. She allowed the child to enter the crosswalk assuming the car was going to stop. She looks back at the car, just in time to save the child. She should have instructed the child to wait, until she saw the car stop.
Seems the best policy would be to have the car come to a stop, then have the
kid cross.
This could have been avoided.
Exactly, people with the right of way get killed more than you can imagine.
Alert crossing guard.
***********************************
She wasn’t that alert, but she did have quick reflexes.
However, she did almost everything else wrong.
She should have met the kid on the side of the street, so the kid wouldn’t just run to her. She is supposed to go out first, and make sure the upcoming driver saw her either with eye contact or slowing down, before giving the kid the okay to cross.
Also, the child is ALWAYS supposed to cross behind the crossing guard for this very reason.
She should have been on the other side of the crosswalk, so that she is standing between the vehicle and the child.
Saw the video, women driver. Was likely on the phone if I were to speculate.
