Kamala Harris assumed office in historic fashion, becoming the first woman to serve "a heartbeat away from the presidency".
But her first year as vice-president has been far from a smooth ride.
The job has not come easy. Ms Harris' approval ratings have slumped. The president has tasked her with assignments that range from the intractable to virtually insoluble.
Her office has been beset by high-profile resignations.
If Ms Harris accepted her party's vice-presidential nomination thinking she would be anointed as the Democratic heir apparent to the presidency, it was a notion that did not take long to dispel.
While Mr Biden said in a press conference on Wednesday that he would keep her as his running mate if he stands for re-election, it remains to be seen whether that will put to rest speculation about her political future.
So what, exactly, has gone wrong for her - and can she set it right? There are no easy explanations and few easy answers.
According to a November survey by USA Today, Ms Harris' public approval rating sat at 28%, making her one of the least popular vice-presidents in modern history - lower than Iraq War architect Dick Cheney, who was reviled by Democrats.
If there was one moment that truly set off the spate of "what's wrong with Kamala Harris" stories that dominated the latter half of 2021, it was that "comically bad" poll, as the San Francisco Chronicle put it. The poll effectively framed the conversation about the vice-president as one of struggle and disappointment.

I hear she likes it bumpy.
And yet GOP so-called still revile Sarah Palin.
If the Hoe cannot execute the difficult tasks assigned to her, then why would anyone think she would be able to handle the same and others as President?
Bumpy ride and “heels up” Harris require direction to the nearest eyewash station.
Once again we are seeing evidence that Quota Hires never do live up to the hype that surrounds them.
If you don’t want a bumpy ride, don’t sit over the axel.
Quota hires have results immunity.
They are always on an endless learning curve.
Patience is compassion.
No easy answer? It's the easiest answer ever -- "NO"
She is grossly incompetent, slept her way up, was the worst California AG imaginable, and is intensely unlikeable.
But she probably bakes good cookies for her mom and is kind to cute little puppies.
That’s what Willie Brown said.
You such made me pass my coffee through my nose.
Good job.
Tolerance is over-rated.
As is the case with any and all ideas, programs and policies generated by Liberals (Commies, really).
She’s anti-American.
It is Obama calling the shots. Get Joe across the two-year finish line and then seat Kamala to finish Joe’s term and be available for the next 8 years. The cartel wants a puppet. They have plenty of dirt on Kamala and can oust her in a heartbeat. But as long as she’s following the script, she will be just fine. Don’t worry about the elections, Kamala, we will take care of that...
The biggest mistake conservatives will make is assuming mid-term and 2024 victories based on polling data.
Saw the headline and wondered if Willie Brown was back in the news.
