Although the attack was fatal, the lead investigator, Hillary Cooley, is reported as characterizing the use of bear spray as helpful.

The victim would have been killed much deader if he hadn't used it.

Bear spray will NOT stop an angry , hungry bear whether its a grizzly or a black bear. Think about it. A thousand bee stings do not stop them from getting honey out of a hive.

Bear spray just makes a hungry bear even more ugly.Its a lefty ploy to give a sense of false safety. Carry a .44 mag pistol at minimum or a large caliber rifle such as .306, .308 or 45-70 .

The only alternative is knife, spear or gun. Ask Freeper Kanawa who stabbed a black bear to death with a 6 inch buck knife in order to save his dog:
