With the turn of the calendar to 2022, Republicans are not only looking to the 2022 midterm elections but to the prospect of Donald Trump running in 2024. Trump is hugely popular with the party’s base and that popularity freezes the plans of other possible candidates for the 2024 nomination. Trump’s hold on that nomination is brittle, however, because of his age. On election day in 2024 Donald Trump will be 78 years old. That is one year older than Ronald Reagan’s age when he left office in 1988.
Looking at the 2024 contest from the other side of the race, there is no reason to expect that Joe Biden will get the nomination. He has been in office for less than one year, and only diehard Democrats believe that he is not suffering from incapacitating mental deficits. The only question is which foreign adversary will take advantage of his weakness: China, Russia or Iran. So the most likely scenario is for Biden’s resignation in 2022 or early 2023.
Trump may be popular now, but once the voters have been shocked by the disaster of one septuagenarian president why would they roll the dice on a 78-year-old Donald Trump holding office to age 82? It’s a very bad bet, especially when there are younger, capable Republicans available. Ron DeSantis is at the top of the list of strong candidates for the presidency, but by 2023 we should have other governors and several senators eager to reach for the nomination.
I believe the above makes a strong case that it would be unwise for Donald Trump to run for the presidency in 2024. That presents the big question: how to persuade Trump to play the role of “kingmaker” in late 2022 and step back from his own candidacy?

Vaccine support is hurting him. Conservatives are coming to the conclusion that while they love Trump, the GOP candidate needs to be somebody dedicated to completely smashing government overreach, before it is too late.
Trump is still the leading candidate - but we'll see if he polls the same a year from now.
No... or maybe as a tactical feint to gain support, and then throw his endorsement to another contender.
125 million people could vote for Trump. He’d still lose the election.
I read the excerpt for Biden’s age (now or in 2024 - NOT given). It did say he probably wouldn’t run in the second paragraph and mentioned incapacitating mental deficits, but no age comparison.
There was no mention of Biden’s age now or in 2024...only mental deficits... I scanned the excerpt looking specifically for Biden’s age....
I hope your crystal ball is out of whack otherwise America is going down for the count. It’s not about a fresh face. What a joke.
If not Trump there is no one else who can take the heat. The Left has gotten worse & worse over the past decade. Once President Trump has cleaned the stables there are people in the wings with the guts & vision to move the ball forward.
At this point those same folks would not be able to run the gauntlet.
That’s not what I read.
RE: Convention of States
I wounder if the Convention of States would do any good.
We have a great Constitution. The problem is it’s being compromised at so many levels.
I see where the fascist “democrats’” Iranian voter base is vowing “revenge” if the ‘RATs don’t put President Trump on “trial” for killing their head military chimpanzee. It’s a weird world these days. I’m pretty sure it way too late to make America great again. It’s officially a turd world crap hole now.
Within months, the entire vaccine debacle will be blamed on Trump.
YES! Unless he begins to show signs of mental deterioration that BIDEN was showing over ten years ago!
Exactly, cue Liz Cheney to say how Trump is dangerous for America.
I agree with you completely. Trump has absolutely legitimate reasons to be enraged about the stolen election. But that’s all he’s about now. He will be too old in 2024 and Biden will not be his opponent. Americans will not want another old man in the White House.
Trump should step back and he should do it soon. He’s blocking the way for other Republicans such as DeSantis who would be strong candidates and without Trump’s baggage.
But Trump won’t do it. His enormous ego won’t let him. The Democrats are in trouble but so are we. And, by the way, Peter Navarro’s book is entitled “In Trump Time.” It’s about how Trump pushed for a quick vaccine. Probably the same way he fast-tracked the construction of his buildings or the skating rink in New York City. This may turn out to have been a catastrophic error in judgment.
It doesn’t matter because even if Trump gets elected in 2024, he would never do what needs to be done to save the nation from complete catastrophe e.g. declare martial law, suspend the Constitution, arrest thousands and deport millions, he’s just too nice of a guy. This country simply won’t be ‘fixed’ through the normal channels of voting, it’s too far gone.
YES!
“Rather than running again I wish he’d offer to chair a Convention of States.”
I’d support updating the Constitution, but unless the Democrats are removed as political players, they’ll just ignore the rewrite, as they ignore the Constitution in its current form.
Instead, we need to do everything possible to drive the Democrats to fringes of politics and to charge and convict those who have clearly broken the law - as in framing Trump/Russia. Trump at least will try...no other Republican would come close to doing it.
and I hope he wants it we need him back.
“...especially when there are younger, capable Republicans available.”
I’d like a list...besides De Santis.
We talk about the Socialist Democrats having no one on their bench, but other than De Santis, who else do we have that isn’t a RINO and can take the gut-busting slander and denigration the Enemy Media will dish out?
The best senario from my perspective is for DJT to have Desantis run as his VP we could ad anoter eight years after Trump finishes his term. I know some Freeper Rinos won’t like it.
