Pennsylvania had been installing historical markers for more than a century when the racist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017 brought a fresh round of questions from the public about just whose stories were being told on the state’s roadsides — and the language used to tell them.
The increased scrutiny helped prompt a review of all 2,500 markers by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a process that has focused on factual errors, inadequate historical context, and racist or otherwise inappropriate references.
So far, the state has removed two markers, revised two and ordered new text for two others.
Across the country, historical markers have in some places become another front in the national reckoningover slavery, segregation and racial violence that hasalso brought downCivil War statues and changed or reconsidered the names of institutions, roadsand geographical features.

Maybe the latter, but it would be hard to spin the former (monarchist Tories) as “Republicans”...
The war up there was brutal; I read an account of a column of Tories being intercepted trying to reach Canada, and they were found with “bales of scalps” (apparently they offered incentives to Indians to kill those colonists seeking independence, and these were proof before payment).
I watched The Monuments Men over the weekend. I could not help but think that what the Nazis and Russians were doing to the arts and humanities is the same thing that the blm and woke folks are doing to our culture in this nation right now.
While I see that this sort of things isn’t precisely “abridging the freedom of speech”, we are in a situation where the government seems to be determining that “the truth shall not be told”.
Wayne was an Indian fighter. But we can’t say that? How is this not censorship? Taking down statues of Robert E. Lee, because of the ideas that are behind such a statue, also seems like censorship.
As an isolated incident I could see it. Maybe some city decides that they’ve had some old statue long enough and they just want to replace it with a statue of, I don’t know, Michael Jackson. Fine. Whatever. But a national campaign to sweep all these things away in one fell swoop — it’s government censorship.
I’m not surprised but I am disheartened that they get away with it.

Mad Anthony Wayne was the general who finally subdued the Indian forces in what is now Ohio. Before he took command the tribes had been regularly fighting the Army to a standstill. The Indian war chief Little Turtle had bested the Army badly but when Wayne took over he knew they were in for trouble. Wayne established a logistic chain and pursued aggressive reconnaissance. Little Turtle advise caution to his more hot blooded chiefs, saying “General Wayne never sleeps.”
I wish they would show who is exactly in these groups doing these things…with pictures.
And let's remember Cherry Valley and the atrocities of those "savages". And a reminder....in early years, savage meant peoples without a written record.

And all these places/things with Indian names...They were done for the purpose of "preserving" their history. Being a warrior was a good thing in their world.

They just removed one in our area because it said “first white child born” in this house....the child died right after the civil war. This was in Upstate NY
These markers need to be shoved up the ***** of the complaining whiners who don’t like the way American HISTORY occurred.
Chicago has an ongoing jihad against monuments to White settlers and pioneers. Even Lief Erickson is unacceptable now. He arrived in North America about 1000AD. I read they renamed Lake Shore Blvd after a Haitian settler.
I think the poster was intimating that the revision would change Tories to Republicans in the spirit of the times that describes Republicans as the enemy.
