McConnell: 'It would be a great idea' for Manchin to switch parties

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday said to reporters that “it would be a great idea” for Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) to switch to the Republican Party.

The comment came after McConnell and Manchin had a meeting as negotiations continue for President Biden’s Build Back Better plan, The Associated Press reported.

“As you know, he likes to talk,” McConnell said of Manchin. “It would not surprise you to know that I’ve suggested for years it would be a great idea, representing a deep red state like West Virginia, for him to come over to our side.”

By who? He's got strong support in WV even from Republicans.

A non-RINO conservative would do.

He just won reelection coupla years ago.

Up again in 2024.

Do we really need another RINO?” For the next two years.. yes.

A simple truth that too many don't want to hear. Would I rather have a conservative than a RINO? Of course! But given the choice between a RINO and a Democrat, I'll take the RINO.

Truth is, RINO's are exclusively Republicans in Name only. Just look at the party breakdown for the votes by party in Garland, Kavanaugh, Barrett, and now BBB. Party affiliation does matter even if they abandon us on a lot of other votes.

In the general, which is harder for a Dem in a deep red state.

If I was Manchin I’d form a third party with Sinema. They would be more powerful than either the R or D party and if hr named it The Coal Party he’d never have to worry about being reelected.

It would be a great idea especially if Manchin brought the tart from Arizona with him. That would make the senate 52-48.

It would be a good idea for McConnell to just retire and let a real conservative take his place

That was supposed to be “not” exclusively. They do tend to vote more often as Republicans than do actual Democrats, even if they are not generally reliable.

yes, you are so right and those of us who would much prefer not to have a RINO must understand that without a majority you get nothing

Oh shut up Mitch. If you are saying it in public, you know it isn’t going to happen.

Manchin will lose his job if he votes to pass this "Gigantic $5 Trillion Bozo Biden Bill."

Statistically, about two thirds of Republican senators are more conservative than McConnell, and about one third are even less conservative.

So McConnell’s job is herding his senate cats into one united force, a political tiger, so to speak.
And keeping Senate Republicans reasonably united is his biggest achievement, while getting crossways with Donald Trump is his greatest failure.

Now, given the choice, I’d take Trump over McConnell in a heartbeat, but if asked “who better to lead Senate Republicans”, I have no answer.

Agree completely. McConnell is known for letting RINO'S defect if he has the votes otherwise, and if they need political cover at home on that issue. He then uses that as the political capital to pressure then on those occasions where every vote counts.

To be honest, he's been very effective at that, with his greatest failure being McCain going back oh his word and saving Obamacare. But ..that's McCain.

There’s always room for another Assistant Democrat, just ask the voters of Kentucky, South Carolina, Idaho, North Dakota, Florida, etc.

The leadership reflects the majority of the members.

Mitch’s bitches made him leader.

Crapo, Grassley, Hoeven, Lankford, Lee, Moran, Murkowsky, Rubio, Scott, Thune and Young all need to be primaried in 2022, even if Trump endorses them.

We will never MAGA by re-electing Assistant Democrats.

Do we really need another RINO?Nope. That's exactly what Manchin would be. I can understand how deep red WV can vote for this guy.

In the general, which is harder for a Dem in a deep red state.

You have to reach the general. Manchin would never survive the primary.
