In a vote Wednesday, New York's city council approved a ban on natural gas in newly constructed buildings, joining cities like San Jose and San Francisco that have made similar commitments to reduce emissions.
Moving away from natural gas means that stoves and heat pumps will be powered by electricity instead, cutting down on carbon emissions. Nearly 40% of carbon emissions in the country — and more than half of New York City's emissions — come from buildings.
The new ban, with 40 votes in the affirmative and seven votes against the measure, applies to buildings that are seven stories or shorter by the end of 2023; buildings that are taller have an additional four years to comply. There are some exceptions in the bill, including hospitals, laundromats and crematoriums.
"This bill was about prioritizing people over profits and properties," Council member Alicka Ampry-Samuel, who led the effort to pass the bill, said at a rally outside city hall Wednesday afternoon. "We are at a point in our lifetimes that we need to act. We need to make sure we are protecting and saving our environment."

They can always burn coal
I was wondering about that. I worked in the City 1974-82. If I recall, lots of ConEd generators were coal. I'm sure by now natgas and oil.
Electricity from the New York grid has a higher carbon footprint than burning natural gas for heat. This is pure virtue signaling insanity.
And how is all that electricity going to be made? Nuke? Coal? LNG? Pick your poison as all have trade offs.
Just like a lot of locales in caulifourkneeyu. Let me just say......fidiots. just got an email today from NVEnergy saying in the last year their natural gas costs have gone up 15-20% so......... Sir-prize! Happy New year! LETS GO BRANDON!
So we are going to use natural gas to generate electricty so we can use that electricity to generate heat? Does anyone understand basic thermodynamics?
Electric heat pumps won’t “cut down on carbon emissions” until we support the grid with more nuclear powered generating facilities.
Ping
Heating, water heating, cooking etc. waste a lot of energy if electricity is used. Having to converge the gas in power plant to electricity, then transport by wire and burn to heat is very inefficient from the scientific point of view and having large carbon footprint!
Theis solution is making things worse!
Insanity
I know. And every one in NH and ME is installing them
Bingo.
And the worse thing you can do with an electric heat pump is to program an overnight set-back.
Temperature recovery is then attempted at the coldest hours of the day.
If the whole city were heated that way you would have blackouts and people freezing in the dark. This is insanity.
Stinks to be in NYC.
(Literally, I know.)
Glad our family got out, a few years ago.
Some very rich person in the area had one but could only be used seasonally. That was years ago.
I’m sure every chef in the city is thrilled to hear this. Wonderful, lets use a electric griddle to cook your 5 star meal. I’m sure restaurants will eventually get a exemption.
How do these goobers think electricity is generated in a reliable fashion?
That is what they do.
There is all kinds of gas in PA, WV and Ohio, yet they will not allow new pipelines. MA buys Russian gas when supplies are tight in the winter. These people will one day figure out that their glorious leaders are treating them like serfs.
