NEW DELHI, Dec 8 (Reuters) - The head of India's armed forces, General Bipin Rawat, was among 13 people killed on Wednesday when the military helicopter they were travelling in crashed, the air force said.
They were en route from an air force base to a hillside military college in the southern state of Tamil Nadu when the Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopter came down near the town of Coonoor.
Local television footage showed rescuers and army personnel carrying bodies up steep slopes from the mangled wreckage. Only one of the 14 people on board survived and was in hospital with injuries.

Were any Chinese nationals near the chopper before it took off?
Just a random accident?
I think I see the problem.........................
Carrying too heavy a load is my guess.
RIP for the people involved.
Most Russian made military equipment has held up fairly well but it does have its flaws and history of spectacular failures. The Chinese ought not to take any pleasure in this accident. They have constructed a huge inventory of jets, drones and ships made with pirated plans, copied electronics and ordnance. Their pilots, soldiers, sailors as well as the equipment have not been tested in combat situations. If history is any guide, they will have to endure a painful learning experience.
The folks over at Zero Hedge have double digits worth of possible suspects.
The general was a hard core Indian nationalist, which made him an arch enemy of Pakistan, China, Russia, just for starters.
Were they coming to pick up Bill Gates?
“Yet another reason why I don’t fly on either small planes or helicopters.”
Small planes, big problems. Big planes, bigger problems.
All 13 were killed but the helicopter survived
Helicopters dont fly anyway. They are so ugly the Earth just rejects them...
(I’m a fixed wing guy)
:)
If a small plane develops engine problems, it is still possible to glide it down under the right circumstances because it has wings and control surfaces. A helicopter seems to become a dead weight once the rotors stop.
The best description of a helicopter I ever heard was given to me by the then head of Australian Navy Fleet Aviation Arm:
A helicopter is a swirling mass of metal fatigue surrounding an oil leak.
I like it 🤣
