The outage at Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud-computing arm left thousands of people in the U.S. without working fridges, roombas and doorbells, highlighting just how reliant people have become on the company as the Internet of Things proliferates across homes.
Multiple Ring users even said they weren’t able to get into their homes without access to the phone app, which was down.
The outage prompted people to reflect on the pitfalls of having a “smart” home that’s overly dependent on not only the internet, but one company in particular -- while those with “dumb” homes gloated that their fridges and light switches were working just fine.

This is one of the concerns with future automobiles and trucks with a connected “kill switch” feature. OnStar for everybody, with a government controller in charge.

“Smart” homes have stupid owners. Kind of a broad brush statement don’t you think?

I’d NEVER put any of that connected garbage in my dwelling. Anything info collected WILL eventually be used against you.

Smart homes aren’t a problem, if you have a contingency plan when you lose connectivity.
My weather monitoring service lost connectivity. No worries, as the collected data is saved locally until connectivity is restored.
Same for a couple of cameras. No worries, as all I do is stream in demand.

A key has worked for me for over 60 years; no updates, does not become obsolete, no double logins required, no phone app required, no battery to charge, no subscription, no calling customer service and proving who I am in order to open my door and, wait for it...... no buying a newer version because mine is no longer supported!
A key is just an amazing technology!

This was no glitch. It was a test.
And it worked.
The left would like nothing better than to completely control our utilities - in the name of combatting, “global warming” of course.

We have a "Smart TV" that is anything but smart.
There is no way I would trust any important function, like refrigeration, heating or security, to that kind of smartness.
