mid growing concerns about a potential new large-scale Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory, at least one Russian T-80 tank has apparently been sighted in occupied Crimea with a bizarre-looking ad hoc armor fit. Armor of this type has been increasingly appearing on Russian tanks as of late and appears to be primarily intended to defend them against attacks by loitering munitions and other armed unmanned aircraft. The solution, which is part of a wider trend of improved defenses for Russian tanks, may well have been inspired by the destruction wrought by drone-launched munitions during last year’s conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, although it may have at least some capacity to decrease the effectiveness of certain top-attack guided missiles, too.
The aforementioned cage or screen-like structures added to the turret tops of Russian tanks are crude metal structures, similar to slat armor, that are clearly intended to provide protection against attacks from directly above. Traditionally, of course, protection for tanks has focused on the sides and the front of the hull and turret. While the armor that we see in the video reportedly taken in Crimea is one of the more common designs, there doesn’t seem to be any standardization of this concept yet, suggesting this work is probably being undertaken, at least partly, on an experimental or improvised basis.

You could buy those things once, as long as you could maintain it yourself.
Ima call BS
I doubt that is going to stop anything a drone could launch. Might help protect TCs against sniper fire in MOUT (combat in cities). Experience in Chechnya war 1 caused the Russians to develop the BMPT vehicles to protect tanks in the urban sprawl.
Thanks, I was always where BMPT came from (whatever it is).
Missile launching drones have been replaced with kamikaze drones. Cheap and effective.
BRDMs too and them damn hind helocopters!
I think youre behind the curve when the SHTF..../s
That’s not fair.
Javelins and also TOW 2Bs, if the administration supplies the Ukrainian army with them.
Pootin is doing just exactly what Hitler used to do. He’s “testing” the waters (and western stomachs).
Hitler marched ill-prepared into the Rhineland in 1936. He later said that if France or Germany had responded German forces would have retreated with their tails between their legs.
Hitler “learned” from this that the UK and France were weak and had no stomach to resist him.
This is now little 5’7” Pootins game of chicken. This is 100% the fault of Russia’s government. It is NONE of Russia’s business what Ukraine joins or does not join. There are no “spheres of influence” anymore. The Chinese are all over central and south America and we don’t/can’t stop it.
We’ve been here before with Russia. In 1961 our tanks were lined up nose to nose with Russia’s after they issued a “demand” that we leave all of Berlin. They blinked first. Whatever we do, we need to make sure that any talk of nuclear war is curtailed and made known that “first strikes” are NOT an option. That senator does not make policy.
This is absolutely horrible behavior. Whatever flaws Ukraine has does not mean it’s people deserve this. Most of them don’t want to be part of Russia and want to be part of the modern world.
An umbrella over the turret. Who’d a thunk it?
This kind of festooning illustrates why tanks have become mostly obsolete for modern war. All that crap imposes a cost in terms of weight, maneuverability and visual signature.
The Crimea belongs to Russia and has for over 200 years.
