Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor rejected the idea that a fetus that has the ability to move and react to pain is a human life that should be protected from abortion.
"Virtually every state defines a brain death as death," Sotomayor, appointed by former President Barack Obama, said during oral arguments in a potential landmark abortion rights case Wednesday, as the state of Mississippi defended an abortion restriction law that directly challenges Roe v. Wade.
"Yet, the literature is filled with episodes of people who are completely and utterly brain dead responding to stimuli," Sotomayor continued. "There's about 40 percent of dead people who, if you touch their feet, the foot will recoil. There are spontaneous acts by dead brain people. So I don't think that a response to -- by a fetus necessarily proves that there's a sensation of pain or that there's consciousness."
Sotomayor also said that she believes the idea that a fetus is a human life is a "religious view."

The personhood fairy touches the inanimate fetus with her magic personhood wand, causing the fetus to glow briefly as it becomes a person.
The language we are hearing from the pro abortion Supremes has implications far beyond abortion.
Euthanasia is one issue.
Murder of inconvenient people is another.
There is a true slippery slope here all the way to Mengele.
This also takes place in the context of sloppy approval, inducements, pressure, duress and in some cases mandates of risky and untested vaccines with serious (and sometimes fatal) side effects which begins to look a lot like human medical experimentation.
Yes, it’s just a clump of cells... with two arms two legs, two eyes, ears, mouth, nose, a beating heart, a brain, a blood type of its own, a nervous system...
Just a clump of cells.
This “person” thing is helping them get away with murder. It’s ambiguous.
Instead, stick with “living” and “human.”
The occupant of the womb, is it living or not? Is it human or not?
Sotomayor would have to concede it’s a living human. In no wise comparable to a dead body. Indeed it has far more in common with a legally protected eagle embryo, than it has with a cadaver.
We have given them latitude by agreeing to the term “person.”
She’s comparing a fetus to a Democrat?
““Movement doesn’t prove consciousness”.”
Definitely applies to her, she’s also without a conscience.
Life begins at conception. Abortion is the taking of a life before birth. The taking of an innocent life is murder. The solution to an unwanted pregnancy should not be the murder of a completely defenseless, completely innocent baby.
yes.Godless LEFT wing mind playing God with a human life. The book of Jude is scary for these people. It says of these morally bankrupt apostates that for them there is......and I quote:
“reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”
That is pure despair. The blackness of darkness forever.
We’re talking about the beginning of life....not the end of life. They are not comparable.
Which way would you (she) rather be mistaken?
- giving a clump of cells undue protection?
- murder a sentient human child?
Absent a bright line, err on the side of caution.
Oh right, there IS a bright line: conception.
what an asshole
and she tells us what it is all about...yep, they think they know all and are perfect...
shaking my head...
Liberals really are ‘jackass's’...

These people should all have to sit and watch a video of a step-by-step actual abortion being performed. It sounds gruesome, but would certainly be eye-opening.
Hypocritical.
If scientists found single-celled organisms on an otherwise cold, dead rock in space, they’d scream, “We’ve found life!” I’m sure she’d have commentary.
Guess as long as it’s alien, it’s life. Not so much in the womb.
Yes she has.
Definitely evil.
Yes indeed.
You are exactly on the right track here—another reason these SC discussions are really scary.
Who gets to decide what is life worth preserving?
If we encounter a truly alien species are we going to make an arbitrary “test” as to whether we can enslave them or kill them?
Science is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Sotomayor goes into the weeds. The Constitution is clear cut.
