New opioids, more powerful than fentanyl, are discovered in D.C. amid deadly wave of overdoses

Forensic analysts have identified a new and highly potent family of synthetic opioids in the District’s illicit drug supply, a worrisome discovery in a city already struggling with a wave of fatal overdoses that shows no signs of abating.

The opioids, found on used syringes examined by scientists at the D.C. Department of Forensic Sciences in September and October, are called protonitazene and isotonitazene, respectively. Experts estimate that each is at least several times more powerful than fentanyl, the synthetic opioid that has displaced heroin in many parts of the United States and is now responsible for the majority of the country’s drug overdoses, including those in the nation’s capital.

The identification of the “nitazenes” in D.C., first reported by WTOP, comes as the District is reckoning with an opioid crisis that has never been worse. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data released this month show that the District saw an estimated 498 fatal overdoses over 12 months during the coronavirus pandemic — an extraordinary figure that eclipses the city’s notably high homicide toll and is larger than the number of drug deaths in 13 states.

[Falling out: Inside the unseen opioid epidemic in the nation’s capital] As yet, there is no indication that the new drugs are widespread, and fentanyl remains the primary threat to opioid users in D.C. But their discovery is an ominous development because the drugs could be less vulnerable to some of the primary tools used to prevent overdoses, according to Alexandra Evans, a chemist at the D.C. public health lab.

This could all be avoided by just legalizing pot, meth and heroin so we wouldn't be getting all of these dangerous drugs out on the street.

“The opioids, found on used syringes examined by scientists at the D.C. Department of Forensic Sciences”

That raises a lot of questions. This same lab has a backlog of DNA tests, ballistic tests, and other crime scene analysis to complete yet they have time to check used syringes?

My advice is to see what new ‘products’ any business ventures Hunter has with China may fit this particular analysis...

Didn’t see a word about the fact that these drugs are pouring through our southern border into this country. Wonder why not? Oh, it’s MSN. Never mind.

I’m guessing that Singapore is not having the same problem.

Not until government gets its share of revenue.

Singapore did a great job of purging this scourge from their society within a generation of becoming independent in the mid 1960s. It is a two step process:

  1. Hang the traffickers.
  2. Exile the addicts from society after their third failure at rehab.

When the program started, one in ten Singaporeans was an opium drug addict. Today, one in ten is a millionaire.

The number of traffickers hanged pales in comparison to the number of wasted and destroyed lives. Or even the number of drug related murders.

Protonitazene and Isotonitazene are just 3 to 4 times more potent than Fentanyl.

The trick is which of the Fentanyl analogues are cheaper to make. The current champ is Carfentanil, which is one hundred times more potent than Fentanyl, but the last I read, only costs about $5k a liter. Which is enough to kill millions of people. Several liters worth have already been capture in North America.

You may want to check out the CDC list of over doses of prescription drugs from in the last 10 years.
Making things legal don’t cure the problem of abuse.
