Authorities in New York's Long Island are investigating a blast that left a crater and was felt miles away Sunday. Police are working with the FBI on the probe, to determine whether it could have been a prelude to something bigger. The Suffolk County Police Department said the explosion occurred on Fox Island, off the coast of West Babylon, around 11:40 a.m. when a device was detonated. Authorities received nearly three dozen 911 calls, the department told Fox News.

Could very well be. I don’t see much bomb debris around that pic’s crater, but I’m sure the FBI cleaned it up, to take it to the lab, and ID it.

I have a friend whose son did the same. He used a weather balloon and put it inside a junk van that was being scrapped. They found the hood a 1/4 mile from the crater. There were 911 calls for that, too. It was a prank.
Then it goes nowhere, like everything else.

Back in high school (late 70s), I was walking in a wooded field about a half mile from school, and just across the street from a VA hospital.
My friend and I cam across a crater, about 2 feet deep and 4 feet around.
Around the crater was a lot of shattered green glass bottles. I looked at a label connected to some shards and it was some sort of chemical - I don’t remember which specifically. But I do remember the label had a warning: “Explodes rapidly when heated.”
So it was a medical waste dump from who knows when which self exploded. I think it may have been there for quite a few years as the field was overgrown.
No harm then? No foul?
We used full and half-sticks of dynamite, depending upon stump size, back in the 50s & 60s, to blow stumps in clearing fields, and they’d leave quite a crater, with the stumps and root systems being 15-20ft away from the crater.
I am starting to think the Kennedy assassination is itself a big FBI cover up à la TWA800, Murat bombing and Mandalay massacre. The other day I was hearing a rapper singing about how “they” killed Kennedy to prevent freeing the blacks, or something to the insinuation it were white supremacists when the killer was full blown Soviet.
My paternal grandfather was a western PA coal miner wayback in the day. He came to the US right around 1900 at the age of 12 and went right into the mines. He was eventually promoted to “Shot Charge” and was responsible for setting the TNT charges in the mines. Back then, he would just go to the company store and buy his TNT there, and kept his stock at his house. In addition to his work in the mines, he was regularly called on by local farmers and property owners to clear stumps.
