Washington is putting all options on the table in determining its response to Russia’s continued military build-up near Ukraine, a senior US official said on Friday.
US Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Karen Donfried said the US is consulting with its European allies on the next moves in responding to Russia’s military escalation.
“All options are on the table. And there's a toolkit that includes a whole range of options,” Ms Donfried said in a call with reporters.
“What we're doing now is monitoring the region closely, consulting with our allies and partners on how do we deter Russian action.”
Russia has amassed thousands of troops and artillery on the Ukrainian border in recent weeks, sparking US and European concerns of a possible invasion.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is travelling to Latvia and Sweden next week to attend the Nato Foreign Ministerial and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe Ministerial Council.
Russia’s military manoeuvres and threats to Ukraine will be high on both meetings’ agendas, the US official said.
“The reason we take those kinds of unusual manoeuvres seriously is because we all remember what happened in 2014. We saw Russia illegally annex part of Ukraine's sovereign territory when it occupied Crimea. And since then, we have seen ongoing violence in eastern Ukraine,” Ms Donfried said.

How dare Russia have military maneuvers - within its own borders!

Thanks for the info. Found this article from 2014...updated in 2017. Surprisingly, it was published on The Huffington Post:
I’m sure CNN and MSNBC are calling Brandon a dangerous war-monger every five minutes, right?
“US says ‘all options’ on the table in responding to Russian build-up near Ukraine”
Gee, where have I heard that before? Oh yeah:
“U.S. says all options on table for a decision on Afghanistan”
Like Afghanistan including surrender.
Does Biden know what options are?
Best option considering who we have as leader.
Sure he does! It takes a keen analytical mind to choose between vanilla and butterscotch pudding.
Starting a war with Russia in their backyard? What could go wrong?
That's not even close to being true.
In 1994, through an accident of fate, the newly independent country of Ukraine found itself in possession of the world's third largest nuclear arsenal.
At first, Ukraine planned to keep its nuclear weapons. But, at the insistence of the two strongest powers in the world -- Russia and the United States -- Ukraine agreed to give up their nukes in exchange for perpetual guarantees of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

How many Senators ratified the treaty you claim commits the US to ‘spilling blood’ in Ukraine?:
As for their submarine fleet, while it may be of some concern it does not come close to being a deterrent of our constantly on patrol fleet of ballistic missile submarines.
************
Its a big concern. The Russian Navy commands one of the largest submarine fleets in the world. Russia also has a fleet of ballistic missile submarines that conduct deterrent patrols.
Read up on Russia’s new long-range nuclear-powered torpedo (i.e., Status-6 or “Poseidon”). It can be fitted with a 100-megaton nuclear warhead designed to create radioactive tsunamis, among other concerning capabilities.
“Its a big concern. The Russian Navy commands one of the largest submarine fleets in the world. Russia also has a fleet of ballistic missile submarines that conduct deterrent patrols.”
Were Russia being run by crazed muzzies perhaps I would be concerned but the Russians do not believe in the 70 virgins bullsh*t and they know as does the rest of the world that a nuclear attack on us will bring a counter attack and total annihilation for their effort.
There is as yet no known defense against these missile subs which together can carry as 3000 or so nuke warheads with each warhead having the destructive capacity 25 times that of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki drops in 1945.
Even a full scale attack on our mainland which totally destroyed our strike capability from here while knocking out all communications would not prevent our subs from launching on their programmed targets.
There are surely many things to be concerned about but a nuke strike from Russia or China is way, way down on the list.
So ignoring it is an option?

I think you’re missing my original point.
Recall that this article was all about the Russian build up and military maneuvers near Ukraine and/or Russian anxiety over NATO expansion.
What I was saying is that Russia is very sensitive to any perceived threats in the “buffer” states that border their country. The recent crescendo of concerns expressed by the administration and some European countries underscore their belief that Russia could launch some type of offensive in the region. Its Russia’s backyard and I have no doubt they could do it. Something like Crimea could well happen again without bringing the U.S. and Russia close to Armageddon.
I don’t dispute the fact that our fleet of boomers is a formidable deterrent. But another thing I think you’re missing is that neutralizing Russia’s boomers also poses a very difficult challenge to us. It’s well known that they can deploy their ballistic missile submarines into the Arctic, which is a very difficult environment for us to operate in.
A full scale war with Russia over a relatively insignificant country like Ukraine unthinkable IMO. Neither country would let things go that far IMO. As you said, the Russians are not crazed people. But they are obsessive about their borders and they can project power to achieve their desired objectives.
You’re right, it seems we are talking about 2 different things.
I agree with you about Russia being paranoid about the border and it certainly is possible but probably unlikely they would invade Europe although personally I don’t give a damn. Biden would do nothing and NATO without us is useless.
I think the very last thing Russia or China wants is a direct confrontation with us. There would be no winners and as I mentioned before no one in the leadership of any of the three has a death wish.
