Pastor apologizes for hosting event featuring Michael Flynn

The Christian Zionist pastor of a major church asked forgiveness for allowing the church to host an event where Michael Flynn said that the United States should only have one religion.

“Last week I allowed an event to be held at Cornerstone Church by an outside organization,” Pastor Matt Hagee said in a statement Thursday. “Regrettably, the organization was not properly vetted. It was not appropriate to allow this event at our church. The Church is not associated with this organization and does not endorse their views.”

Hagee’s father is Pastor John Hagee, who founded Christians United For Israel, the powerhouse Christian pro-Israel group.

The event took place on Saturday and was part of ReAwaken America, a Christian-themed speaking tour backed by the Christian news network America Faith. Flynn, former US President Donald Trump’s first national security adviser, gave a speech at the event calling for a single US religion.

Flynn is also one of the most ardent defenders of Trump’s false claim that he won last year’s presidential election.

“If we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion,” Flynn said. “One nation under God, and one religion under God.”

It would have been refreshing if Matt Hagee had contacted Flynn for clarification, or perhaps an interview instead of distancing himself...

Hagees have always exemplified the “best” of what being a Christian is supposed to be :( /sarc

The United States was founded as a Christian nation. That means the majority of people in this country identified as Christian even though there were many different sectarian views. But the unique idea in our nation was to disentangle government from religion.

Remember that America began as a result of mostly Christian people fleeing persecution in Europe as a result of the conflict between Catholics and protestants and various sectarian views that were enforced by the governments of the nations that made them the official religion. The founders allowed for the possibility of specific sectarian denominations of Christianity to be the official religion of states, Districts or commonwealths. It was up to each state to determine the role of government and specific endorsement a religion within that state. Eventually all states adopted the position that there was no official state religion either.

However various communities sprung up that were built around the local church or religious community that shared a common faith. There was enough common ground between all of the different religious persuasions in order to unite us as a nation.

I don’t know what general Flynn’s intention was but we do have a problem today of the government failing to protect religious freedom and imposing a Secular or even anti-religious worldview upon our society.

We also have a problem with religions that innately are unable to respect the freedom of religion in general.

Furthermore, if we were to again become an overwhelmingly Christian nation, this would be reflected in the choice of people that are chosen to represent us in our government. This is how it should be.

His message in context was that all people of faith need to come together to fight the tyranny that is happening.

His exact words, were not well expressed - perhaps he should have a memorized speech so that what he means is more clearly expressed.

He did make a post on his telegram that he was NOT advocating for only one religion is USA.

I reject the idea of a trinity. I reject the alleged divinity of any person. Finally, I reject the Manichean concept of an anti-god who is at war with the One G-d. No fence sitting here. Not everyone accepts your paradigms, and those that do are not worshipping Satan, whom I conceive as a mere employee of G-d whose job it is to tempt, prosecute and punish so that there can be free choice. Take it or leave it.

Hagee, a Christian pastor, is uncomfortable that Flynn called for America to return to its Christian roots. Gutless.

I like Hague. This is not his finest moment.

Furthermore, I embrace the idea that the nations, whether Christian, Hindu or Shintoist, are giving honor to intermediaries between themselves and the One G-d, which is acceptable for them, whether the Trinitarian-ism of Christians or the Great Wheel hierarchy of Hindus. They can get into Paradise with those sets of beliefs, provided they behave righteously. For Jews, however, this concept of intermediaries is forbidden. So the Jewish Heaven is not exclusive to Jews, and more exacting of Jews. But Hell is not eternal, either, but more akin to the Catholic purgatory.

That, in a nutshell, is the theological divide between Jews and Christians. I hope you don’t think this means I’m worshipping the Devil, because I don’t agree that the Devil as you understand it exists.

FYI.... the greatest lie of all is convincing people that he doesn’t exist.

The idea of a rival power to G-d is inimical to monotheism. It’s dualism. There is a Devil, but he’s an employee of the heavenly court, nothing more nor less.

Wasn’t even implying he was a rival power. He can only do what he’s allowed. Thankfully we have our free will to either reject or embrace the master of lies.

Employee? He was fired and pitched out on his head (along with his followers) so he’s one angry cat cause he already knows his fate. His focus is to take as many with him as possible to that fiery lake.

“He was fired and pitched out on his head (along with his followers) so he’s one angry cat cause he already knows his fate. His focus is to take as many with him as possible to that fiery lake.”

And here we disagree. He’s doing his job, never fired. His job is to tempt, prosecute, and carry out the punishment in the hereafter. He does a really good (ha!) job. But he is not an independent agent at all. When the time comes, he will cease to exist and be subsumed in the light of the Infinite, and he’ll rejoice.

This is saying a lot, of course. It means that Pol Pot, Hitler, Mao and Stalin are all on G-d. But if the soul is eternal and comes back many times until its entire mission is completed, that means that G-d is indebted to those who suffered, or that the suffering is a balancing of accounts for past lives.

At any rate, there is no eternal damnation and Heaven itself is just a waiting room for souls who will return at the End of Days and/or until their next reincarnation, to keep them amused in the interim. Hell is just a laundromat, and often there’s a long waiting list of those clamoring to get in and be cleansed.

At that time some states had religious tests but there was too much variety among Protestants in the country as a whole (Catholics and Jews were so few in number that they might have ignored them) for any one religion to be selected as the official religion.

Catholics were the majority in Maryland at the time of the Founding.

how do you implement that? “only one religion”

Let’s take Israel - a far smaller area. Let’s even assume that the Muslims disappear. Even then there are Druze, Bahaiis and Christians.

Let’s assume just a district in Israel with Jews. Even Jews have different flavors of Rabbinical Judaism (don’t even get me started on the Samaritans).

It’s hard to implement. Even the hardest Muslim states haven’t succeeded in removing other expressions of Islam

Our Founding Fathers believed in established Christian religion.

"Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?" - James Madison.

Better hope that when the dust settles the sect that wins out is the one you adhere to.

“Better hope that when the dust settles the sect that wins out is the one you adhere to.”

Wow!!! Aren’t you the wise one. I bet no one has ever had such a profound, original thought as that.

I merely said that our Founders believed in established churches, due to the FACT that when the Constitution was adopted, three fourths of the states had established churches. That means they saw nothing wrong with the state establishing a church. But they were ALL Christian churches, which probably offends such purists as yourself.

Do you have a source for that? It was my understanding that, despite the fact that the colony was founded by a Catholic, Lord Baltimore, as a refuge for English Catholics, Catholics were a minority of the colonists from the beginning. In 1649 the Puritans removed the religious toleration for the Catholics. Until 1776 Catholics were not allowed to hold office in Maryland—Charles Carroll of Carrollton was able to be chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1776 only because Maryland had just declared its independence of Great Britain. He had been sent to Europe for his education which was against the law.
