WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s choice to run one of the agencies charged with overseeing the banking industry faced sharp questioning Thursday from Republican senators, who tried to label Saule Omarova as someone who would nationalize the U.S. banking system.
Omarova, 55, was nominated in September to be the nation’s next comptroller of the currency. If confirmed, she would be the first woman and person of color to run the 158-year-old agency.
Omarova is a long-time academic and well-regarded expert on financial regulation, but many Republicans and the banking industry have taken issue with several papers published during her career where she’s proposed wholesale changes to the banking system.
“Taken in totality, her ideas do amount to a socialist manifesto for American financial services,” said Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
The banking lobby is overwhelmingly against the nomination. In an interview with The Associated Press this week, Omarova said their opposition is largely due to fears that she would be a tough regulator for Wall Street and banks.
Her origins in the former Soviet Union have become red meat for some members of Congress and their allies in the conservative press. In a letter to Omarova after she was nominated, Toomey requested a copy of a graduation paper she wrote about Karl Marx “in the original Russian” when she was an undergraduate at Moscow State University.
While some senators at the hearing tried to downplay this narrative, the issue was raised by Sen. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana. The senator inquired as to whether Omarova still had a membership with youth Soviet communist organizations.
“I don’t know whether to call you professor or comrade,” Kennedy said, a comment that elicited some gasps in the hearing room and, later, a rebuke from the chairman of the committee, Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

Mitt and Murkowski will vote to confirm her.
love kennedy
Any Republican who votes for this Marxist horror should be booted out of the party.
To be fair, they are trying to “reveal” something SO OBVIOUS that one can only conclude it is WILLFUL BLINDNESS and ACTIVE TREASON to appoint her.....Indeed, to PRESENT HER for appointment.
For your viewing pleasure: THE MONA LISA!
Let me walk you into the Louvre to a display that says, Mona Lisa. Tell me to take a good look at something EVERYBODY RECOGNIZES and then pretend I’ve never seen or heard of it before and it must be explained and identified to me.
Yeah, similar, yes?

The Left sure gets its panties in a twist with the mildest of rebukes. The same leftists throw around the standard cliches against anyone on the right as ‘racist, homophobic, nazi, white supremacists. It’s all quite tiring.
Attention Montana Freepers! Call or email Senator Tester and let him know how you feel about this commie.
AP = Always Propaganda.
Just because she is an avowed Communist? 🤡
More accurately Exposes.
Another “pounce” story.
paints?
AP should be the one exposing her as the radical.
Shame on them.
Apparatik Pravda .. not worth the pixel or the printed paper it is piled on like so much dung.
Asspress is radical too.
re: “GOP paints Biden’s choice for bank regulator as radical”
And the AP sees nothing wrong with a Marxist/Communists/radicals as a bank regulators?
Who do they hire at the AP these days? Morons?
No paint needed.
Yeah like the Associated Press never "painted" anyone on our side as anything but an ogre.
She’s a Communist who has criticized the concept of private bank accounts and declared her desire to bankrupt oil and gas companies. But yeah, “the GOP painting her as a radical” is the headline. Good job, AP.
