Congress is requiring in its $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that automakers install monitoring systems in their cars to stop drivers from operating their vehicles while intoxicated.
Monitoring systems to stop drunk drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, according to the new legislation.
Some convicted drunk drivers already have to use breathalyzer devices attached to their vehicles' ignition interlock. By blowing into a tube, the system will disable the vehicle if the individual's blood alcohol level is above the legal threshold.
The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) program is a public-private partnership partially funded by the government and is one of the groups currently working on two separate alcohol detection systems that would require no action from the driver.
The first is a sensor testing the air within the car to detect a driver's blood alcohol levels - but to work it would need to distinguish the driver's breath from any inebriated passengers.
The second is an infrared touch sensor to detect blood alcohol level through skin that could be built into a steering wheel or start button.
The $1.2 trillion piece of legislation states that 'advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger motor vehicles,' and that vehicles should be able to 'prevent or limit' operation if a driver is impaired.
It calls for a window of five to six years for the new standard to go into effect.

Guess I’ll have to stick with pre 2026 cars. Not hard to do. Most of the new cars are junk that costs serious $$ if something goes wrong. Reason numero why I drive a 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup.

I have a 2004 truck, which unfortunately got somewhat damaged by flooding in the hurricanes in Florida a couple of years ago...it still runs, but everything is rusted out and it probably won’t be safe to drive much longer.
However, I’m just going to get another older vehicle. I love some of the new electronics, such as the backup camera. But you can buy those separately and add them in, so I don’t see any reason to buy a car that’s going to spy on me.
BTW, I don’t get drunk and I don’t drive if I’ve had more than a glass of wine...but I just don’t like the idea.
Also, this may sound a little paranoid, but I think they really want to stop alcohol consumption. Weed is the thing, and NYC recently passed a law preventing employers from testing for cannabis even after a possibly stoned employee has caused an accident.
So pot...which makes you a total, passive idiot who can be “perma-stoned”...is the way to go and alcohol, which is traditional, mentioned in the Bible in many contexts, part of Christian and Jewish sacraments and celebrations, and can make people comfortable, or talkative and creative but sometimes angry and rebellious, is going to be demonized again.
Muslims, btw, don’t drink alcohol but are big consumers of hash and pot (not to mention khat, which some men spend most of their income on) and probably owe some of their stupidity to this. They certainly owe some of their poverty to it, because a lot of Muslim men spend most of their days and their money buying and chewing khat or smoking dope at the local hookah parlor. The women and children have to go out and find their own living. But that’s okay with the imams.
Marijuana is clearly the government favored drug. When people get in automobile accidents in some jurisdictions they are not even allowed to be tested for marijuana, or at any rate, the results cannot be reporter. That’s because marijuana is the ideal drug mechanism for pacifying the plebs...hey dude, it’s all cool.
