It is, in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer & a law called Assembly Bill 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.

The lack of truck drivers is nothing new. Truck drivers are probably the most abused workers in the American workforce. Not only by their own employers, but by customers as well.

The simplest way to describe the whole mess, and who is responsible is all wrapped up in one word. Democrats.

I started reading the logistics magazines and they were putting the primary blame on the stimulus payments. We printed a bunch of money and people spent it on stuff from China since much of the service industries were shutdown. That and covid shutdown depleted inventories which are being restocked, all at the same time. Our supply chain isn't made to absorb a surge like this. Yes you can print money but you can't print truck drivers and ports.

The Federalist explained it well: Blame California.

Not only did they basically ban owner-operators when it comes to trucking, but their handing money out to young people who can fill those roles as drivers is creating a shortage. Add to that the fact that the state banned trucks older than 2011 and with engines older than 2010, mandating electic trucks which don’t yet exist.

Seriously, read the article if you find it. I don’t have it at the moment.

There has been a problem in the trucking industry for 3-4 years now due to an inverted age pyramid in the work force.

A lot of older drivers have retired while demand for drivers has gone up. Driving a big rig is not something just anyone can do. It requires a lot of self discipline, close attention to detail and rigorous focus.

Add to that an ever encroaching Govt “safety” regime that can cause even relatively minor errors a termination level offense you have a situation where companies are having a hard time getting enough driver.

Add to that the massive additional regulations CA piles on make the problem exponentially worse. For example, to operate legally in CA you need a tractor and trailer with equipped with Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay-approved side skirts or tail fairings that improve fuel economy from 4% to 5%, in addition to low-rolling-resistance tires (either standard or wide-base singles). They must also have a SmartWay-certified tractor

The result is you have to have special tractors and trailers to operate in CA legally. The result is a high barrier to entry into the CA trucking market that significantly degrades their able to expand quickly to meet capacity crunches out of the Ports

There was an article posted here a few days ago where Truckers were interviewed and are placing the blame squarely on the Unionized Port Crane Operators. The Truckers are saying those Union Crane Operators are working at a Snails Pace. On purpose.
The Truckers say they have been working the California Ports for many years and have never seen such an anemic pace of work moving containers off of cargo ships.
The Truckers interviewed are pissed off about this situation. They say the Crane operators earn $250000.00 a year and they could not care less about how their actions are affecting everyone else down stream.

It is simply a wartime embargo against the US.

It is being instigated through our White House.

We are at war, and don’t even know it.

China wants to win this thing without firing a shot, and we are watching them get away with it.

A House representative from Calif. the other day cited the new tractor requirement and the ban on owner operators. Also that when a container is loaded on a trailer and left sitting it causes a shortage of trailers.

The rest of the country is being affected by the mindless decisions by Calif.

This is the result of government dictating how to run business, i.e., socialism.

How a about the rule a truck cannot pick up a container unless they drop off one equal in size?

Rather than otr drivers, they’re going to regional. New Hook and Drop loads are better for truckers because they don’t have to wait to load and unload at the docks.
Also consider the HOS (hours of service) mandates by the DOT.

In addition to 'A', 'B', and 'C' there is:

D-Paying people to stay home,

E-Fuel prices to high to make trucking profitable,

F-Nobody available to load or unload the truck cargo (see 'D' above)

Someone commented somewhere the other day that Newsom mandated an extensive sanitation process between containers being unloaded. It apparently can take several hours, which could be even longer if the longshoremen are deliberately taking their sweet time as someone posted above.
