BROOKSHIRE, Texas – An aircraft with 21 people onboard ran off a runway Tuesday in a field near an airport in Brookshire, injuring one person, authorities said.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 rolled through a fence and caught fire in a field while attempting to depart from Houston Executive Airport in Brookshire near Katy, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

All 21 people aboard -- 18 passengers and three crew members -- evacuated safely. Officials said two people were transported from the scene.

“Anytime you have plane that doesn’t make a landing on the runway like its supposed to, we’re always expecting the worst and hoping for the best and today, we absolutely, positively got the best outcome we could hope for,” said Tim Gibson, Emergency Service District Director for Waller-Harris Emergency Service District 200.

Authorities said it took substantial effort to extinguish the blaze.

Waller County Judge Trey Duhon said the plane was chartered to Boston for Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. The Houston Astros are scheduled to play against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park later today.

The crash cut power to 1,806 homes in the area. CenterPoint Energy utility crews restored power to all but 17 customers as of noon. Crews remain onsite making repairs.

The plane appears to be owned by a company in Spring. The manufacturing certificate for the plane was issued in 2015. The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 plane has a 172-seat capacity and a twin-engine jet.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash. The FAA will assists in the investigation.

I guess that the air-traffic-control didn’t bang on a trash can loud enough to relay directions.

Was the plane carrying the Astros offense?

It was certainly below max take off weight. Engine failure on take off roll?

No, I don’t think I’ll ever get over Macho Grande, those wounds run pretty deep.

On multi-engine aircraft, if you lose an engine early in the takeoff, you abort the takeoff. If you lose an engine late in the takeoff, you continue the takeoff on the remaining engines (certification regulations require this to be possible).

The speed at which the decision transitions from “stop” to “go” is called the V1 speed.

My guess would be that they lost an engine just before they reached the “V1” speed, attempted to abort the takeoff, and for some reason forgot to deploy the thrust reversers.

Take a look at the engine visible in the photo in Post 9 and you’ll see that at least on that engine it’s not deployed.

I find the Astros hate in this series amusing considering the sign stealing scheme was headed up by none other than Red Sox manager Alex Cora. I don’t have any particular love for the Astros but I do find it interesting that the MLB didn’t have the stomach to investigate his schemes when he moved to a large market team.

I really don’t care for any of the remaining four teams, it’s a shame one of them has to win.

Cora was suspended for the entire 2020 season.
No players were suspended.
Cora did not throw anyone else under the bus.
