Robot Dogs Now Have Assault Rifles Mounted On Their Backs (Updated)

Ghost Robotics and SWORD International have teamed up to create a rifle-toting "robot dog." Called the Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle, or SPUR, the system adds a 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle from SWORD to one of Ghost Robotics' quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles, or Q-UGVs.

The SPUR made its debut on the show floor at the Association of the U.S. Army's (AUSA) main annual convention in Washington, D.C., which opened yesterday. Though Ghost Robotics is partnered with a number of other companies to explore defense and security applications, among others, for its Q-UGVs — which you can read more about in this past War Zone feature — this appears to be the first example of one of these unmanned systems with an actual weapon mounted on it. Unarmed examples of the Q-UGV are notably already in limited use with the U.S. Air Force's 325th Security Forces Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida and are being tested by other units within that service.

The exact configuration of the 6.5mm gun inside the SPUR module — how much ammunition it contains, and how hard it might be to reload — are all unclear. A product card for SPUR that emerged during the AUSA show can be instructed remotely to chamber the first round from an unloaded state, as well as clear the chamber and safe the gun.

Michael Crichton had automated guns posted around the perimeter of the jungle camp in his 1980 novel “Congo.”

Aliens also had automated guns, not that it did them any good.

Now everyone needs a mobile EMP weapon just to be safe.

I put a rubber band gun on my dog and the little coward wouldn’t go outside.

Said all the other dogs would make fun of him.

Somehow…..mysteriously…..I got shot in the behind by a rubber band when I closed the door.

No snacks for him today.

My oven is currently on the fritz. The electronics module in it randomly turns the oven on/off bake or broil, the clock goes crazy, & the oven light comes on/off also.

Just sayin.........

The problem is that you can’t patrol the base & attend mandatory CRT & COVID vaccine lectures at the same time. The patrol dogs are now being retrained as emotional support dogs.

The 1911 Colt has a flawless pedigree.

What's not to like?

The 1911 is an obsolete design with a couple glaring flaws. The feed ramp is on the frame, not the barrel, so it requires massive removal of case support (throating) to feed HP. The leaf spring extractor imparts more stress per unit area than a coil, so it requires adjustment to maintain proper extractor tension.

All other auto pistol designs except 1911 clones have corrected these flaws.

I mean other than Bagram AFB, which we no longer have, exactly where would it have any utility over armed humans with real dogs?

Easier to be placed under centralized control and used against American citizens. No hesitation, no questioning of orders, etc. Just locate your political opponents and issue a kill order.

“it requires massive removal of case support (throating) to feed HP.”

My 1911 loads and shoots Hollowpoints just fine as is out of the box.
