What makes us human? The answer may be found in overlooked DNA

...

The chimpanzee is our closest living relative in evolutionary terms and research suggests our kinship derives from a common ancestor. About five to six million years ago, our evolutionary paths separated, leading to the chimpanzee of today, and Homo Sapiens, humankind in the 21st century.

In a new study, stem cell researchers at Lund examined what it is in our DNA that makes human and chimpanzee brains different -- and they have found answers.

"Instead of studying living humans and chimpanzees, we used stem cells grown in a lab. The stem cells were reprogrammed from skin cells by our partners in Germany, the USA and Japan. Then we examined the stem cells that we had developed into brain cells," explains Johan Jakobsson, professor of neuroscience at Lund University, who led the study.

Using the stem cells, the researchers specifically grew brain cells from humans and chimpanzees and compared the two cell types. The researchers then found that humans and chimpanzees use a part of their DNA in different ways, which appears to play a considerable role in the development of our brains.

"The part of our DNA identified as different was unexpected. It was a so-called structural variant of DNA that were previously called "junk DNA," a long repetitive DNA string which has long been deemed to have no function. Previously, researchers have looked for answers in the part of the DNA where the protein-producing genes are -- which only makes up about two per cent of our entire DNA -- and examined the proteins themselves to find examples of differences."

Lol.. us and chimps. They leave out the all important hochs genes to claim we descended from an ape. Not science. Only if you belueve in global warming and every unvaxxed person is killing grandma kinda science.

I am always amazed that they think any of our DNA is “junk DNA”. All life is amazingly complex yet there is all this useless junk DNA serving no purpose. It would seem to be absurd concept from the start. Rather than the junk label, seems like unexplained would be a better term. My guess is there is very little DNA that is orphaned and unneeded.

DNA is the programming done by out creator. There is no junk, just code we don’t and may never understand. Another puzzle is Democrats are letting pre-made pieces of border wall rot in Texas and paying the company a fee to NOT build it while other countries are protecting their people. I read an article over at Breitbart about that, “Poland Passes Law to Turn Away Migrants at Border and Build a Wall”, so give that a look. Even Iran built a border wall to protect themselves against Afghanis. The product is already purchased and made and ordered by the courts to continue but O’Biden has an agenda and that is Invasion USA (with inferior third world DNA).

You’ve obviously never been to a farm or a zoo. Yes, there was just a story last month of some kind of monkey performing oral on it’s mate.

People often dismiss what they do not understand. Which is why I remind folks Democrats are NOT stupid they are evil and insidious, and that difference matters.

Not in agreement with you on this. Hugh Ross is absolutely horrible in both his understanding and application of Scripture. Not even certain he is a Christian.

A bone fragment here, partial tooth there, a whole narrative constructed based on nothing. I am pleased to be considered uneducated by the poorly educated.

Hi.

Not a thread hijack attempt...

Long time ago there was a prophet named Jonah.

The last thing Jonah want to do was acknowledge G-d, but G-d kept bugging him. So Jonah tried to escape, but the Lord insisted he go to Nineveh.

While on the “escape” ship a terrible storm happened and everyone on board blamed Jonah. Through his butt overboard.

Then a large creature swallowed him and for three days he was in the belly of the beast.

Then the beast projectile vomited Jonah onto the beach alive.

Right next to the great city of Nineveh.

Took some time but Jonah knows there's a G-d.

So will these researchers one day.

It was "junk DNA" until some re$earcher connived enough taxpayer money to determine that it was not "junk DNA" -- it's just that early DNA re$earchers did not think it performed a purpose that was ascertainable with the money that they had already received, and so it waited, as do many other DNA fields, including and particularly embryosis/post-embryosis genomic development as mentioned directly in the article. But I enjoyed the post!

This has been known for a very long time (20 or 30 years). I question the article’s accuracy. They call it coded and non-coded DNA, but it’s actually coding and non-coding. Coding DNA provides the instructions to make proteins (body structures). Non-coding was a “mystery” and called “junk DNA.” Numerous Christian experts have long held that it was the non-coding DNA where human exceptionalism was hidden. Our body structure may be 90+ percent similar to other primates, but in other ways the similarities are nill.

God's fifth commandment: 5 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you."

Please keep this in mind...

from the article: "The part of our DNA identified as different was unexpected.

From the Science Daily link: "Our results indicate that what has been significant for the brain's development is instead perhaps hidden in the overlooked 98 per cent, which appears to be important.
This is a surprising finding.""

The great debate over "junk DNA" involves definitions of words as much as anything else -- how much DNA is "coding", how much is "influencing" and how much has no obvious biological function?
This report is from 2019:

So, some portion of the 99% of non-coding DNA works "regulate" other regions, but how much, all of it?

This report is from 2020:

So, if coding DNA is 1% and non-functioning DNA is up to 90% that leaves, let's say, ~10% to ~25% for "regulating" DNA.
So what about all that "junk"?

All of our "junk" DNA is needed for at least one of God's purposes, which is to help us obey His fifth commandment -- "junk" DNA is where God writes the record of our ancestors' mutations, going back as far as we care to look.
It's how sites like ancestry.com find our ethnicities, they match our "junk" mutations with those of others known to have lived in certain places at certain times.

Without "junk" DNA to record & preserve harmless mutations, we couldn't know nearly as much about who we are and where we came from.

So God not only wants us to honor our ancestors, he's telling us (in "junk" DNA) where to look for them.

Short form...Chimps and humans share NO DNA.

And yet, how much DNA do humans share with a banana?
