The workers who keep global supply chains moving are warning of a 'system collapse'

London (CNN Business)Seafarers, truck drivers and airline workers have endured quarantines, travel restrictions and complex Covid-19 vaccination and testing requirements to keep stretched supply chains moving during the pandemic.

But many are now reaching their breaking point, posing yet another threat to the badly tangled network of ports, container vessels and trucking companies that moves goods around the world.

In an open letter Wednesday to heads of state attending the United Nations General Assembly, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and other industry groups warned of a "global transport system collapse" if governments do not restore freedom of movement to transport workers and give them priority to receive vaccines ...

Inconsistent requirements mean that some seafarers have been vaccinated multiple times because some countries have approved only certain vaccines...Meanwhile, the unequal distribution of vaccines globally means that only about 25% to 30% of seafarers, many of who are from India and the Philippines, are fully vaccinated...

as to your empty workplace arguments, most small businesses have way less than 100 employees which is the rule, right? (or did they change it again?). As of today over 90% of Calif HCW are vaccinated; a quick look at NY hospitals and attrition is about 10% or less. American Airlines reported over 90%, United is over 99% vaccinated. US Military is 93% first shot. I dunno about other regions/businesses, but honestly, it’s easier to say I’ll quit to a survey or poll than to actually do it, especially with the holidays coming on. Probably easier if one is young and single and can move home in a pinch, or whose spouse is primary income anyway.

OK. I get what you’re saying and it seems reasonable. But a seaport is a node that trade goods simply pass thru. There are truckers, longshoremen and rail workers who must move the containers out from the port. These workers are under threat of termination if they refuse vaccination. And quite frankly the crew could be restricted to the ships during the unloading/loading process. And this whole thing from the USA’s perspective is completely absurd when we are allowing tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants into the country each week with minimal-to-no health screening.

I would caution that attrition may not complete. Many of deadlines for compliance either just passed (this week) or haven’t been reached yet.

American Airlines terminated just under 600 workers (announced this week). Not sure what their total workforce is today but in 2019 it was 96,000 worldwide. So less than 1% give or take?

My local papers are full of articles about staffing shortages at the hospitals and this has been going on for some months. Could be a lot of reasons for the staffing shortages including the fact that during the height of COVID the hospitals suspended many surgical procedures and so forth. I would expect that they wouldn’t pay extra nurses to just stand around, and getting them back under the current circumstances could be a slow process.

I cant really find much on vaccination by occupation. I did find this Jan article that says the dock unions wanted vaccine preference right after HCW and first responders even. Another article that was paywalled from SC hinted at the same. So who knows what the uptake was? is?. No clue about rail.
this is from Jan when they were first rolling out the vaccine:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/could-covid-19-surge-lead-130044928.html

So no clue on rail, but yureka! I did find a recent (2 weeks ago) survey on truckers - 7% would look for jobs in smaller companies (that’s a good thing, right?) and 10% said they’d quit, (which is that normal annual attrition thing) in contrast to 25% who said they’d wait to be fired. So maybe 10% loss, but, a gain for smaller companies looking for drivers.

So some don't have enough jabs and some have too many. oh boy

“System collapse occurred 11/3/2020.”

That was another nail in the coffin, for sure!

JFK stealing the election was one. 0bama being ‘anointed’ by BOTH parties, while being ineligible to serve was another. The GOP throwing up the likes of Bush & Mittens & McCain as president was another. And they almost won with the Algore v. Bush ‘hanging chad’ fiasco!

Yours is the most recent in a long line, for those of us playing along at home. And those have just been in my short lifetime so far! ;)

I’ll throw this in, too: Heels Up Harris, another INELIGIBLE TO SERVE is our VP, fer Pete’s Sake!

And the beat goes on! It truly is Every Woman for Herself these days. Plan accordingly, Ladies! :)

Thank you. All of this is a sick man made crisis that could end immediately.

This is proof that what is in those fake vaxes the globalists want in every body in the world for control.

God help us.

Interestingly, I don't think this supply chain disruption has anything to do with international shipping or port terminal operations.

One of the data sources I use periodically for work is a trucking industry database that posts weekly and monthly reports on activity in the industry. They use one of the largest online resources for trucking brokerage services as their primary indicator of business activity in the trucking industry.

Before COVID, this brokerage clearinghouse reported about 400,000 transactions per day.

For the week ending last Friday, they reported four days of more than 1 million transactions per day -- peaking at nearly 1.1 million.

I'm not sure what's driving this, but if my behavior is any indication then I'll suggest this is what's happening: Many Americans are buying as many durable goods as possible right now while they have the money on hand -- because they're planning to reduce their consumption dramatically in the coming months and years.

Good post, but I'd also suggest that the numbers are likely to be complete B.S.

With something like 55%-60% of the U.S. population considered "fully vaccinated" (and I'm not even sure what that means), I find it highly unlikely that ANY company with tens of thousands of employees can say with a straight face that 99% of its employees are vaccinated.

Titanium oxide alone makes up about 31% of the resins in paint, and the main source of titanium oxide is ilmenite ore, and the main sources of ilmenite ore are Western Australia, Canada, China, India, Mozambique, New Zealand, Norway, Ukraine and South Africa, but not the U.S.

Just one small bit of how global trade is a big part of a simple thing like paint.

I suspect the 200 dollars worth of daffodils from Holland are on some ship waiting to dock at some port in US. Hope I get them by early Nov.

where the worlds seafarers come from:

“China, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Russian Federation and Ukraine are estimated to be the five largest supply countries for all seafarers (officers and ratings). The Philippines is the biggest supplier of ratings, followed by China, Indonesia, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. While China is the biggest supplier of officers, followed by the Philippines, India, Indonesia and the Russian Federation.”

“The global demand for seafarers is estimated at 1,545,000, with the industry requiring approximately 790,500 officers and 754,500 ratings. This indicates that the demand for officers has increased by around 24.1%, while the demand for ratings has increased by around 1.0%. The current supply-demand situation highlights a shortage of approximately 16,500 officers and a surplus of around 119,000 ratings.”

“While the global supply of officers is forecast to increase steadily, this trend is expected to be outpaced by increasing demand.”

Yep

I am buying now with the idea that I will not replace any durable goods for the next 10 years. With inflation out of control goods are going to be as cheap as they will be for the foreseeable future.

the disruptions are from labor shortages - which have a variety of causes - that is making it difficult to keep up with the shipping transaction demand you see in the statistics you mentioned.

“In a more recent survey, Centerline Drivers found that more than 50 percent of employers were having trouble hiring truckers.”
