as to your empty workplace arguments, most small businesses have way less than 100 employees which is the rule, right? (or did they change it again?). As of today over 90% of Calif HCW are vaccinated; a quick look at NY hospitals and attrition is about 10% or less. American Airlines reported over 90%, United is over 99% vaccinated. US Military is 93% first shot. I dunno about other regions/businesses, but honestly, it’s easier to say I’ll quit to a survey or poll than to actually do it, especially with the holidays coming on. Probably easier if one is young and single and can move home in a pinch, or whose spouse is primary income anyway.
OK. I get what you’re saying and it seems reasonable. But a seaport is a node that trade goods simply pass thru. There are truckers, longshoremen and rail workers who must move the containers out from the port. These workers are under threat of termination if they refuse vaccination. And quite frankly the crew could be restricted to the ships during the unloading/loading process. And this whole thing from the USA’s perspective is completely absurd when we are allowing tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants into the country each week with minimal-to-no health screening.
I would caution that attrition may not complete. Many of deadlines for compliance either just passed (this week) or haven’t been reached yet.
American Airlines terminated just under 600 workers (announced this week). Not sure what their total workforce is today but in 2019 it was 96,000 worldwide. So less than 1% give or take?
My local papers are full of articles about staffing shortages at the hospitals and this has been going on for some months. Could be a lot of reasons for the staffing shortages including the fact that during the height of COVID the hospitals suspended many surgical procedures and so forth. I would expect that they wouldn’t pay extra nurses to just stand around, and getting them back under the current circumstances could be a slow process.

I cant really find much on vaccination by occupation. I did find this Jan article that says the dock unions wanted vaccine preference right after HCW and first responders even. Another article that was paywalled from SC hinted at the same. So who knows what the uptake was? is?. No clue about rail.

So no clue on rail, but yureka! I did find a recent (2 weeks ago) survey on truckers - 7% would look for jobs in smaller companies (that’s a good thing, right?) and 10% said they’d quit, (which is that normal annual attrition thing) in contrast to 25% who said they’d wait to be fired. So maybe 10% loss, but, a gain for smaller companies looking for drivers.

One of the data sources I use periodically for work is a trucking industry database that posts weekly and monthly reports on activity in the industry. They use one of the largest online resources for trucking brokerage services as their primary indicator of business activity in the trucking industry.
Before COVID, this brokerage clearinghouse reported about 400,000 transactions per day.
For the week ending last Friday, they reported four days of more than 1 million transactions per day -- peaking at nearly 1.1 million.
I'm not sure what's driving this, but if my behavior is any indication then I'll suggest this is what's happening: Many Americans are buying as many durable goods as possible right now while they have the money on hand -- because they're planning to reduce their consumption dramatically in the coming months and years.
With something like 55%-60% of the U.S. population considered "fully vaccinated" (and I'm not even sure what that means), I find it highly unlikely that ANY company with tens of thousands of employees can say with a straight face that 99% of its employees are vaccinated.

I am buying now with the idea that I will not replace any durable goods for the next 10 years. With inflation out of control goods are going to be as cheap as they will be for the foreseeable future.
the disruptions are from labor shortages - which have a variety of causes - that is making it difficult to keep up with the shipping transaction demand you see in the statistics you mentioned.
